“Half Awake” came from those evenings lately where the sky looks unreal for about twenty minutes and suddenly everyone’s outside again pretending they weren’t emotionally hibernating all winter. There’s something weirdly comforting about sitting in a parking lot at sunset doing absolutely nothing while the world keeps moving around you. I started humming the melody before the song even existed and ended up recording it half asleep so I wouldn’t forget it. At some point the sloth showed up too. I think I just liked the idea of something calm hanging above all the noise, completely unbothered while everything underneath it keeps moving. Just looking out On another evening You can’t stop the world But you can slow with me So let’s stay out, tonight, lo-ove Watching airplanes Fade to sea Fade to sea... (Ah-ah) Ooh-ooh-ooh (Ah-ah) So call up, the late-night trains We’ll ride out, wherever they go Does anybody know Lo-ove? Are we waking up Or drifting slo-ow? And above The parking lot trees There's a sloth asleep In green, lo-ove Just swaying there, through summer heat Half awake Like me Stay here next to me Ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh Streetlights moving slowly Somewhere past the trees Half awake beside me (Ah-ah...)
