+ Show full styles

[INTRO - WARM VINYL CRACKLE, ORGAN, CLEAN ELECTRIC GUITAR] [Old radio tuning] DJ: Good evening, stranger. You wanted to know who I am. Let me tell you a story. [VERSE 1] I was sitting in this room when the world went quiet One empty chair and a telephone Clock on the wall said eleven-eleven And somehow I knew I wasn’t alone I heard a voice coming through the speaker A voice that sounded just like mine It said, “You have one job to do” “Keep them listening until the time arrives” So I stayed behind this microphone Night after night, year after year Sending songs into the darkness For people who were never supposed to hear [PRE-CHORUS] I don’t choose the callers I don’t choose the songs I only keep the signal alive And if you’ve heard my voice before Then something has already gone wrong tonight [CHORUS] I know what happened yesterday I know what hasn’t happened yet I know the names you will remember And the ones you’ll try to forget I know what happened yesterday I’ve watched tomorrow disappear But don’t believe everything you hear Because sometimes the truth Is the thing that sounds sincere [VERSE 2] You think the station started with a photograph You think the phone call opened up the door But I’ve been broadcasting longer Than anybody remembers anymore I’ve watched a little girl become a woman I’ve watched a stranger become a friend I’ve watched two people meet at eleven-eleven And I’ve watched them do it all again There’s a room beneath the radio With photographs along the wall Every picture tells a different ending Every ending starts with the same phone call [PRE-CHORUS] I don’t control the station I don’t control the time I’m only here to keep the pieces From falling out of line But every time I try to change it The signal pulls me back And somebody from tomorrow Starts talking through the static again [CHORUS] I know what happened yesterday I know what hasn’t happened yet I know the names you will remember And the ones you’ll try to forget I know what happened yesterday I’ve watched tomorrow disappear But don’t believe everything you hear Because sometimes the truth Is the thing that sounds sincere [BRIDGE - ORGAN AND GUITAR DROP LOW] DJ: There’s something I’ve never told you. [Pause] DJ: I remember the first broadcast. [Soft piano enters] DJ: There was no station. No transmitter. No building. No microphone. Just a woman… standing in an empty room. She looked directly at me and said: VOICE: “Turn on the radio.” [Static] DJ: So I did. [Beat] DJ: And I heard myself. [Silence] DJ: Except… I wasn’t born yet. [Music swells] [FINAL CHORUS] I know what happened yesterday But yesterday remembers me I know the future’s calling But the future isn’t free I know what happened yesterday And now I finally understand The station isn’t broadcasting time… It’s broadcasting who I am [FINAL REFRAIN] Maybe I’m the voice Maybe I’m the caller Maybe I’m the one Who’s been searching all along Maybe every song Was a message to myself And every stranger Was somebody I once was [OUTRO - SLOW ORGAN, VINYL CRACKLE] [Radio static] VOICE: Do you remember me? DJ: No. VOICE: You will. [Static] DJ: Wait… [Pause] DJ: That’s my voice. [CLICK] [END]
