I walk the path the town avoids, that narrow frost-laced railing above the whispers. Funny. The wind shivers like it recognizes me, like we shared a secret once and I forgot to keep my half. The houses blink politely, as if they’ve rehearsed this greeting for ages. A kid waves. Not scared. Not surprised. Just... used to me. And that stings sharper than the cold. The air tugs at something buried in my ribs, a flicker, a shape, a fall echoing upward instead of down... but it slips away before it hits meaning. Why does the snow remember me better than I remember myself? Why does every echo in this town sound like a promise I once broke? If the truth is buried under glittered frost, don’t dig it up, I’m scared it’ll look like me. Tell me why the wind keeps whispering, “you’ve already been here... you’ve already been here...” I knock on every door again, each one wearing that same crooked smile. “Back so soon?” “Did you forget already?” “Do you want the short version or the tragic one?” I laugh. Because what else do you do when the punchline is your existence? A cracked lantern tilts toward me, spilling light like it’s trying to confess. And suddenly... my shadow leans away from me as if bracing itself for impact. There’s a sound, a hush shaped like memory, a hush shaped like descent. Then a warmth beneath my feet where warmth shouldn’t be. And I know. Oh, I know. Even if I pretend I don’t. The town falls silent. Every wreath turns its gaze. Every window holds its breath. And the truth unwraps itself, a ribbon slipping loose from a story I never wanted to read again. A step too far. A night too quiet. A heart too empty to echo back. A world that didn’t notice I’d been fading for years. I didn’t fall because of the height. I fell because no one thought I might. And the snow caught me like it always does. Cold... but kinder than anyone else ever was. Why does the snow remember me better than the life I left behind? Why does this loop feel warmer now even though it’s freezing outside? Maybe the truth doesn’t need a voice, maybe the silence says enough. If I return next year, will anyone wait up? Or will I haunt this town forever because this town is the only one that ever noticed me? The snow hums my name again... and I can’t tell if that’s comfort or the curse.
