CONTINUE? ▶ YES NO …………。 ──────────────────── 『平成レトロ』 “Heisei Retro” [Intro] “Heisei Retro” I saw those words, walked right past them, then took about three steps back. ...Retro? Wait. Heisei is retro now? [Verse 1] An old game console in the closet, red, white, and yellow cables. Save data lived on memory cards, strategy guides filled with sticky notes. Dark screens while the game was loading, discs covered in scratches. Back then, I was playing with the future. [Pre-Chorus 1] It was new. No doubt about it. Back then, it was new. Someone had put a price tag on what felt like the future just yesterday. [Chorus 1] Heisei Retro. What a terrifying thing to call it. I hadn't even said I missed those days yet, but the world had already decided they were something to be nostalgic about. I don't remember growing old. I just kept living, like I always had. [Verse 2] Games glowing on a CRT, a flip phone in my pocket. Just choosing your own ringtone felt like a little piece of personality. Borrowing CDs, ripping them onto the computer, then throwing everything into some folder with a name I'd forget. [Pre-Chorus 2] I thought it would never disappear. It was data. Surely data would last forever. But then— the ports disappeared, the standards disappeared, the services shut down, until even my memories were no longer compatible. [Chorus 2] Heisei Retro. So that's what they call it now. The world that once felt so futuristic is sitting behind a display case. “Wow, that's nostalgic.” It took hearing those words for me to finally realize— somewhere along the way, I became the one explaining how things used to work. [Bridge] “Back in the day...” I never thought I'd be the one saying those words. Why we blew into game cartridges. Why we prayed every time we saved. Why we couldn't use the internet while someone was on the phone. And the more I explain, the more I wonder— when did I become a historical artifact too? [Final Chorus] Heisei Retro. While I can still laugh at the name, let's boot up yesterday's future one more time. It's okay if there's no picture. It's okay if it won't load. Because back then, we really were playing with the future. [Outro] “Heisei Retro.” Museum material now... huh. “Heisei Retro.” I look at those words one more time. ...Well. Reiwa will end up over there someday too. I'll be waiting. ──────────────────── ❖ Liner Notes Okay. It really is retro. lol The hardware died. There's no official release anymore. Can't even find a used copy. So every now and then, I make the rounds of secondhand shops looking for old hardware. lol Still nothing. And then— I reach for the ultimate foul-smelling weapon. Toward the legends recorded in ancient texts... For games of ages past, there exists a forbidden resurrection spell known as— the emulator. But remember— thou shalt not summon the dead from the museum without permission. ──────────────────── ❖ P.S. — NEXT EPISODE!! “IN SEARCH OF LOST SOFTWARE” —Across the Sea of 404 Not Found— In search of memories long lost, the man ventures once more— into the Gray Zone. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AND WAIT FOR IT!!!!! ❖ P.S.2 — WHOOPS!? Ah... I forgot about the Password of Resurrection. lol I'm sure I copied it down... One wrong character shouldn't make that much difference, right? ............It does. ❖ P.S.3 — THE MANUAL Come to think of it, we used to read the instruction manual before we even started the game. In the car on the way home. Because we couldn't wait to play. ............Got carsick, though. lol ❖ P.S.4 — CONTINUE? “Just one more try.” How many nights did I make it through believing those words? CONTINUE? ▶ YES NO ............... Some things never change. lol ❖ P.S.5♪ Don't worry. I'm still here. It's retro now? So what? The power comes on. The screen lights up. The controller still works. Then— we can still play♪ ............Now then. What should I boot up next?
