The heavens watched our world collapse and never made a sound, While cities burned beneath the smoke and kingdoms crumbled down. The rivers filled with ash and blood, the sky turned iron red, And every prayer the dying spoke seemed buried with the dead. I marched among the shattered homes where starving children cried, And saw the smoke of distant wars stretch black across the sky. The angels spoke of sacred law from towers built above, Yet never crossed the clouds to save the ones they claimed to love. The throne remained in silence while the years consumed the land, So hatred grew where faith had died and spread from man to man. The demons rose from broken pits beneath the fractured stone, Not born from evil as they claimed, but forged and left alone. Their bodies scarred by ancient wars nobody understood, Raised by generations taught that violence was good. I stood before their gathered ranks beneath a blood-red moon, And swore the gates of Heaven would be broken open soon. The armies cheered like thunder rolling through a mountain pass, While furnace light reflected from the helmets made of brass. We crossed the wastelands scorched by fire and rivers dark with tar, Following old battlefields abandoned by the stars. The angels saw our banners rise beyond the northern plain, And gathered every host they had to meet us once again. Their silver armor filled the clouds, their wings concealed the sun, As if the final war of all creation had begun. The first attack split open skies and drowned the world in flame, And neither side remembered who had started it or when. I watched a thousand angels fall like meteors through the smoke, While demons climbed celestial walls through fire and choking soot. The clouds were filled with burning ash, the air was thick with screams, And blood ran down the golden roads in scarlet shining streams. For seven days and seven nights the slaughter never ceased, Until the walls of Heaven cracked from west to farthest east. We stormed the gates expecting gods and armies still untold, But found abandoned palaces and empty halls of gold. No king remained upon the throne, no master gave command, Just dust upon forgotten crowns and silence through the land. The angels stopped their fighting first and lowered every blade, The demons stared in disbelief at all the lies we'd made. For every war and every death, each city burned and slain, Had served a throne already dead and rulers long decayed. I walked into the empty court where judgment should have been, And heard my footsteps echo through the quietness within. The heavens hadn't fallen from some enemy below, They died long before any living soul could know. The angels dropped their shattered spears, the demons sheathed their knives, And all of us stood wondering what came after all our lives. The sky was cracked, the stars were dim, the world was cold and grey, But for the first time anyone was free to choose a way. No heaven waiting overhead, no hell beneath the stone, Just those who lived beyond the war deciding for their own. The fires faded from the clouds, the blood rain finally dried, And all the gods we feared so long were buried by our side.
