MERCY 021 – The Return of Distance | The Mercy
(Verse 1) In Year Fifteen they raised their sail and crossed the western sea, With weathered charts and guarded seed and letters carried free. They found the distant harbours lit, with living bells at rest, Then turned their bow for home again and carried back the west. (Verse 2) The harbour crowds stood silent when the returning vessel came, For every sealed and distant shore had answered with a name. No valley held the final remnant, no coast alone survived, And every claim of chosen ground was broken by the tide. (Chorus) The Return of Distance opened every long-forgotten shore, With wonder in the rigging and a warning at the door. The sea brought trade and kinship, but it carried fever too, And every bond between the lands made old protection new. (Verse 3) They unloaded seed and letters from the ports beyond the foam, And read of births and vanished towns beneath another dome. New medicines and customs moved through every crowded quay, While rival treaties followed close behind the open sea. (Verse 4) The watchmen raised the quarantine and counted every breath, For one infected sailor could return a harbour death. Some elders feared the wider world and begged the gates be sealed, While younger hands saw futures in the charts the crew revealed. (Chorus) The Return of Distance opened every long-forgotten shore, With wonder in the rigging and a warning at the door. The sea brought trade and kinship, but it carried fever too, And every bond between the lands made old protection new. (Bridge) The ocean had been shelter when no stranger crossed the foam, But shelter turned to silence when each shore believed alone. They learned that every harbour held a different law and scar, And joining distant people made their choices travel far. (Outro) So still the sail crews cross the dark with letters, seed and light, And every guarded anchorage must choose its welcome right. The world grew larger once again when proof returned by sea, And distance became passage, debt and shared humanity.
