Symphony of Hidden Truth (Dmitri) |
The Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) enjoyed great success with his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mzensk" until Stalin attended a performance and was far from impressed by the music. Shostakovich was subsequently declared an enemy of the state. He survived the Stalinist purges partly because he lived out of a packed suitcase and partly because he publicly repented, outwardly conforming his 5th Symphony to the criteria of the required "Socialist Realism." However, his works are multifaceted and filled with irony. In this sense, despite his outward conformity, Shostakovich always told the truth through his music. In his compositions, he frequently used the motif D-Eb-C-B (in German notation D-Es-C-H = DSCH, representing D. SCHostakowitsch in German spelling, analogous to Bach's B-A-C-H). __________________________________________ [D Eb C B (=DSCH) orchestral Intro] [Movement I: The Hospital Room, Moscow, 1975 (Largo – Adagio)] The clock is ticking, merciless and slow, A final countdown, nowhere left to go. The hours pass like honey, thick and tart, A bitter torment for a weary heart. The hands that once across the ivory flew, Are frozen now, and nothing they can do. A captive in this shell of bone and skin, Just like the captive I have always been. [Movement II: The Rising Star (Allegro molto – Scherzo)] When I was young and fueled by fire and light, I pushed the boundaries, testing every height. I composed the hymns, the anthems of First May, The revolution’s pulse, the dawning day. The opera „Lady Macbeth of Mzensk“ - The impact of the work was so intense. Two years of praise, the critics' loud refrain, A soaring triumph - then, it turned to pain. [Movement III: The Terror (Moderato – Poco a poco più mosso)] He came to see me, Stalin took his seat, Then left in silence, cold and incomplete. The Pravda struck, a "muddle" they would call, An enemy of state, I watched my kingdom fall. The sleepless nights, dressed in my suit and tie, The suitcase by the door to flee and not to die. Through every purge, I waited for the sound, Of heavy boots upon the frozen ground. [Movement IV: Survival & The 5th (Allegro non troppo – Marcia ironico)] I hid the Fourth, to keep my head and name, And played the part, to escape the deadly game. A new work followed, written for the state, To save my life and turn the tide of fate. But as the ink was drying on the page, I felt a silent, bitter, hidden rage. I was no longer me, the man I’d been, I was a ghost within the great machine. I let my terror flow into the sound, My grief, my anger, buried and profound. Behind the brass, the bombast and the drum, I hid the truth, while everyone stayed numb. They heard a hymn to power, grand and loud, A soaring anthem for the faceless crowd. But those who listened heard the parody, A Mahler-echo, weeping through the key. Like being beaten with a heavy rod, While screaming "Joy!" and bowing to a god. "Rejoice!" they cry, "Rejoice and do your part!" With hollow cheers and a breaking heart. [Movement V: Final Truth & The Naught (Adagio – Morendo)] So I survived within this inner strife, Conforming out, but resistant in my life. I wore the mask the bitter years demand, Yet told the truth with every trembling hand. Now as the cold world fades into the grey, I find no peace to take with me today. No heaven waits, just nothingness and night, I do not crave it, though I’ve lost the fight. But do not call me tool or favorite son, No opportunist for the things I’ve done. I never lied, no matter what they say, I only hid the truth - and saved the day.
