THIS FEEDER’S MINE! !!

[Intro – breathless, playful scat over frantic jazz] Zip-zippa-zoo, ba-da-bwee! Whirrrr—zip! Look at me! Diddle-dee, biddle-bee, wings in time— Sweet little feeder— THIS ONE’S MINE! [Verse 1] Morning sun and away I go, Zero to sixty from branch to rose, Hover left, hover right, Back it up and outta sight! Ruby throat in the golden sun, Twenty flowers and I’m not done, Sip-sip-sip, then up I fly— Like somebody tossed me into the sky! [Pre-Chorus] Forward! Backward! Sideways—STOP! Hang in the air, then suddenly DROP! Round the porch and past the vine— Oh! There’s the feeder— [Chorus] THIS FEEDER’S MINE! Mine-mine-mine-mine— Sweet sugar water, looking fine! You can have the flowers, You can have the vine, But don’t you even THINK about this feeder of mine! Zing to the left! Zoom to the right! Tiny little bird with an appetite! Come any closer and you’ll cross that line— Hey! Hey! HEY! THIS FEEDER’S MINE! [Instrumental Break – dizzying trumpet and flute trading impossibly fast phrases] Ba-doop! Bwee-bwee! Ziddle-diddle-ZING! Whirrrrrrr— Gone! [Verse 2] Salvia, trumpet vine, bee balm too, Every little blossom has something to do, Dip that bill and take one taste, No time, no time, no time to waste! Hover at a blossom— Perfectly still— Except those wings going faster still! Then another hummer comes sneaking around— Hold it. Who invited YOU to town? [Music suddenly stops] ... [One sharp piano note] Excuse me? [CHASE BREAK – full band explodes] GO-GO-GO-GO-GO! Around the feeder! Over the chair! Under the porch! Straight through the air! Up to the oak! Back to the line! Turn around, buddy— THAT FEEDER’S MINE! [Chorus] Mine-mine-mine-mine— I claimed this feeder at half-past nine! Never mind the fact there’s room for nine— In hummingbird logic— IT’S ALL MINE! Zing to the left! Zoom to the right! Chase you at morning, Chase you at night! Three empty perches? That’s perfectly fine! Nobody’s using ’em— THEY’RE STILL MINE! [Bridge – airy, floating, dreamy jazz] For half a heartbeat, I hang in the blue, Nothing above me, Nothing below— Just sunlight shimmering green, gold and red, A tiny bright jewel where gravity fled. A flower is calling... I drift into line... [Suspicious pause] Wait. Is that another hummingbird at my feeder? [Massive jazz hit] OH, ABSOLUTELY NOT! [Final Chorus – faster than before] Mine-mine-mine-mine-mine-mine-MINE! Feathers are flashing and wings intertwine! Darting and diving in aerial design, Eight tiny ounces of ATTITUDE— [Spoken] Okay, considerably less than eight ounces. [Band hits] BUT STILL! Zip to the blossom! Zap to the tree! Buzz by your head just to make you see! Hover and shimmer and sparkle and shine, Then guard that feeder like— MINE! MINE! MINE! [Outro – increasingly chaotic scat] Biddle-bop, ziddle-zap, Sip-sip-ZOOM! Flower to feeder, Feeder to bloom! Whirrrrrrr— Zip! Gone! Back! HEY! GET AWAY FROM MY— [abrupt final chord] FEEDER!
