[Verse 1] Long ago Long before us Grown-ups lined up two by two But only some could choose the leaders Only some could say, "I do" Moms could scrub and sew and study Plant the seeds and cook the food Still they heard, "You cannot vote here." How would that feel If it were you? [Chorus] They marched so we could choose They sang in worn-out shoes From schools to busy streets Their brave hearts spread the news They wrote They walked They spoke Till old, Unfair rules broke Now every time we mark that box We're marching in their shoes [Verse 2] Some went walking in the rainstorms Holding signs with shaking hands Some were tossed inside of jail cells Just for making simple plans "Let our voices count," they shouted, "We are people just like you." Year by year the laws got brighter Step by small step, Dreams came true [Chorus] They marched so we could choose They sang in worn-out shoes From schools to busy streets Their brave hearts spread the news They wrote They walked They spoke Till old, Unfair rules broke Now every time we mark that box We're marching in their shoes [Bridge] Remember every grandma's story Every sister, Every friend How they stood and stood together "How we're treated has to end." So when you're grown and voting Big sticker on your coat Think of all those mighty helpers Who gave their yes To give your vote [Chorus] They marched so we could choose They sang in worn-out shoes From schools to busy streets Their brave hearts spread the news They wrote They walked They spoke Till old, Unfair rules broke Now every time we mark that box We're marching in their shoes
