Porch Light (Major Tom’s Reply)”

Intro (spoken, half-sung over drifting chords) Ground Control to Major Tom… She’s burning through the atmosphere again tonight, a red comet tearing across our living-room sky. I keep the helmet on, visor cracked, taking every shard of solar flare straight to the chest. I still believe the orbit will settle. I still believe the blue girl I married is coming home. Verse 1 The kitchen clock ticks like a failing thruster, her shadow detonates against the walls in white-hot arcs. Plates lift off like satellites, spin, shatter into stardust. I float in the wreckage, arms open, collecting the sharp pieces in my palms so the morning won’t cut her bare feet when she remembers how to walk. Verse 2 Midnight radio spits static and sirens, her voice a rogue transmission: “You were never here, you were never here—” I answer with the same three words every loop, soft as oxygen: “Copy that, still here, still here.” The curtains billow like parachutes that forgot how to open. Chorus (big, anthemic, synths swelling) Take me past the black horizon, where the stormclouds lose their fire. I’ll keep the porch light burning through the dark, a single steady star she can lock onto. Coming home, coming home, my cosmonaut in a dress of flames, coming home, coming home, I’ll be the gravity you need again. Verse 3 Her eyes are two dead monitors flickering Morse, short short long, short short long: I hate you, save me. I read the signal clear, answer in silent pulses, thumb against her wrist: I’m still tuned, still locked, still yours. Outside, frost crawls across the windows like lunar mold. Verse 4 Some mornings the house tilts forty-five degrees, gravity drunk on yesterday’s thunder. I strap myself to the doorway, countdown backwards from a thousand broken teacups, wait for the engines of her soul to reignite, blue-white and beautiful and mine. Bridge (raw, drums drop out, just distorted vocal and a single trembling guitar) I taste metal where her words landed, blood and stardust on my tongue. If love is a capsule built for two and one of us is spinning out of control, then let me burn up first, let me be the heat shield, let me be the piece that breaks away so she can make it back to planet Earth alive. Chorus (final, huge, choir of layered voices) Take me past the black horizon, where the stormclouds lose their fire. I’ve got fuel enough for both of us, love, just aim your heart through the dark. Coming home, coming home, my cosmonaut, my flame, my only sun, coming home, coming home, one day you’ll touch down soft in my arms. Outro (instruments fall away, just a lone voice and distant orbiting beeps) Ground Control… this is Major Tom. The silence just got quieter. I think I see her silhouette against the sunrise on the edge of the sky. She’s folding her wings of fire. She’s starting to descend. Major Tom signing off… Tell the blue girl her husband never left the tower. Tell her the light’s still on.
