How To Be Here

V6

First, make yourself useful. Learn every room and every rule. Know who needs quiet, who needs a joke, who needs you steady when everything broke. Learn the coffee order, remember the date, arrive before asking if you’re already late. Become so reliable, gentle, and giving you confuse being needed with actually living. It happens. Some of us built whole personalities that way, earning our right to exist every day. We called it compassion. We called it care. Never asked why love required repair. Next, become pleasant. Not happy. Pleasant. There’s a difference you’ll learn to perform: happy has weather; pleasant stays warm. Pleasant says, “Fine,” while swallowing doubt, because having a feeling might put someone out. Your body will object. Let it. The body is rude when it’s telling the truth. It remembers the things you explained away in youth. The jaw that stays tight, the breath held inside— all those tiny alarms you were trained to override. Next, learn how little space you can take. Fold at the edges. Become easy to make into whatever the room requires. Call self-erasure controlling your fires. Say sorry when somebody steps on your feet. Say sorry for crying. Say sorry for need. Say sorry so often the word becomes air, a tax you keep paying for simply being there. Eventually you’ll wonder, Why does becoming real feel like disappearing? Good. The instructions are finally interfering. Now take up an ordinary amount of space. Not boldly. Not bravely. Just stay in your place— and by your place, I mean wherever you are. You don’t need permission to exist where you are. Sit all the way back in the chair. Finish the sentence. Let silence stay there. Say no without stitching an essay behind it. If someone dislikes your boundary, let them mind it. This will feel cruel. It isn’t. Your nervous system’s grading a test written by people who liked you best when you needed nothing, asked for less, and called your exhaustion tenderness. Next, disappoint somebody. Choose, if you can, someone who loved your lack of demand. Watch what happens when you don’t comply: The ceiling stays up. The birds still fly. Someone makes toast. Somebody’s late. Traffic continues its terrible fate. And suddenly you’ll realize you’ve spent half your years evacuating buildings for somebody else’s fears. Next, want something. Don’t build a case. Don’t bring three witnesses into the space. Want it because wanting is reason enough. Desire doesn’t need to make itself tough. Say: I want to be held. I need to be heard. I changed my mind. I meant every word. I want more. I want less. I don’t want that. And resist the temptation to take any of it back. Next, become inconvenient. Rest on the day they needed your labor. Ask for the favor instead of being the favor. Change the plan. Need clarification. Have preferences without justification. You are allowed to dislike the fucking restaurant. No childhood wound. No deeper intent. Sometimes you hate the food. That’s the whole event. Next, stop making every scar earn its keep. Some wounds aren’t lessons buried that deep. Some things were awful. Some losses just cost. Not everything broken was secretly lost so something better could enter your life. Sometimes a wound is simply a knife. You don’t owe anybody wisdom from pain, a beautiful garden because you survived rain. You can say: That hurt. It changed me. I wish it had not. And leave the meaning right there to rot. Next— No. That’s the trick. There isn’t a list. No final instruction you’ve somehow missed. No polished version waiting ahead who finally deserves the life that you led. You were real when useful. Real when afraid. Real in every apology you shouldn’t have made. Real when you stayed. Real when you ran. Real before anybody could understand. So burn the instructions. Keep only this: Take the whole chair. Want what you wish. Say yes when it’s yes. Say no when it’s no. Stay when you mean it. Leave when you go. Be difficult. Tender. Uncertain. Sincere. You don’t have to become real. You have to become willing to know you were always here.
