[Verse 1] I clock in to the gray again Same old smile on my face Pay the rent in numbness Make my bed just in my head I got a medal for “doing fine” Always cutting like a knife Everybody says, “You’re strong” While I’m folding alive [Verse 2] The sink is full since yesterday The phone won’t stop its hum I keep my shoes by the doorway Like I might outrun what I’ve become The mirror shows what I’m not though A blank grin, same cheap line “Have a wonderful suffering” Just enjoy your decline [Pre-Chorus 1] And I break when they ask me “How bad can it be?” Like a bruise has manners Like the pain says please [Chorus 1] Oh, what a gift What a beautiful mess (what a gift) I’m the poster child For secondhand distress Oh, what a gift Put it right on my chest (what a gift) If you need a model At faking I’m the best [Verse 3] I learned to dress the damage In a shirt that fits too tight I learned to answer “I’m okay” Like a ritual every night The calendar keeps its promises With the same cruel parade And I’m winning at disappearing In a very colorful shade [Pre-Chorus 2] And I flinch when they ask me “How bad can it be?” Like a storm needs permission To drown who is me [Chorus 2] Oh, what a gift What a beautiful mess (what a gift) I’m the poster child For secondhand distress Oh, what a gift Put it right on my chest (what a gift) If you need a model At failing I’m also the best [Spoken Bridge] Yeah, sure. Tell me again to “think positive.” Hand me a calendar. Hand me a grin. Hand me a reason that fits in a brochure. I’ll file it right next to the ache. [Deeply Sad Break] I got tired Before the day began Tired of my own name Tired of the plan If hope had a face It already left I’m still here But I’m not all here yet [Final Chorus] Oh, what a gift What a beautiful mess (what a gift) I’m the poster child For secondhand distress Oh, what a gift But I’m still standing, I guess (what a gift) One small spark in the wreckage One breath I can press Oh, what a gift I’m still here in the flesh (what a gift) Not cured, not clean But I made it to the next
