Everybody loves a kind word, a fundamental weakness, Yeah, I’m guilty too. A stranger tapped me on the shoulder, said, “Friend, I gotta tell ya, you’re rockin’ those shoes!” We chatted. And soon, I felt the squeeze. My new-found friend found that he’s full flat on funds. After heaping all that praise upon my shoes, could I refuse? I’d been flattered. That’s what mattered even more than maybe being a con pawn. I’d been burned, and now I learned that sometimes when it all seems too good to be true, your mind will find a way to keep believing. Raised on faith in TV ad space, good judgment seems a luxury not quite worth the cost. This pill will burn your fat while you’re sleeping. This soap cleans cars and counters and leaves your hands soft. Wait there’s more! Some stories stay a little vague, never quite told if they’re real or they’re fake. Tooth fairy, Saint Nick, are they tricks, oh, why complain riding this gravy train? UFO probes and gold ‘neath rainbows, it’s hard telling fact from fiction now. Myths insane beat the mundane, but sometimes when it seems it’s too good to be true, that’s the reason it’s so easy to keep believing. [instrumental break] Now I’m not here to judge. Delusions work for billions to get through the day. Just keep an eye out that it never should do more harm than good. Not a great sign though, telling kids lies so you don’t have to face the hard but true. Cuz one year, it’ll become clear that people they trusted fed them ‘too good to be trues’ and what they do with that is kinda on you. And that’s the honest truth.
