YOU WEREN’T EXPECTING ME

V5.5

[Intro — low piano, distant thunder, upright bass] [Spoken, male, calm] She said the cabin was private. No neighbors. No questions. No reason anyone should know. [pause] That should've been my first warning. [Verse 1] She poured the wine like she'd done it every night Candle on the table, fire burning bright She asked me where I'd been, I asked her where she'd been She smiled like she already knew the answer before I'd begin There was something in the room I couldn't quite explain Three empty glasses sitting underneath the flame I asked her who had joined us, she just laughed and said “Some people leave behind more than they ever meant.” [Pre-Chorus] Then I noticed on the mantel A little row of silver things A watch, a ring, a broken chain And one familiar set of keys She caught me looking. [Spoken] “You notice everything, don't you?” [Beat] “Occupational hazard.” [Chorus] You weren't expecting me Not the man who walked through that door You thought I'd come here chasing trouble Like the ones who came before You weren't expecting questions You weren't expecting doubt You thought I'd lose my good sense Before the night was out You said the cabin keeps what you don't Well, sweetheart, now I know You weren't expecting me And you should've let me go [Verse 2] You talked about surrender like it was a game I watched the confidence disappear whenever I said your name You asked me if I'd ever let somebody else decide I smiled and said, “Lady, I've been waiting for you to try.” Then I placed a photograph beside your wine The room went quiet for the very first time You looked at it twice, then slowly looked at me And suddenly the woman who knew everything... Didn't know what I knew. [Pre-Chorus] I said, “Tell me about the men Who came here before tonight.” You reached for your glass. [Spoken] I moved it out of reach. [Beat] “Let's just talk.” [Chorus] You weren't expecting me Not the man you thought I'd be You thought I'd play the perfect fool And fall into your mystery You weren't expecting patience You weren't expecting eyes That could see through all the candlelight And every pretty lie You said nobody comes this far Unless they're looking to get lost But sometimes somebody walks in Already knowing what it costs [Bridge — stripped down, intimate] [Spoken, almost whispered] I didn't come for the wine. I didn't come for the fire. And I sure as hell didn't come to become another name you couldn't remember. [piano single notes] I came because three men disappeared. Three men who had the same story. Three men who all knew your name. [long pause] And now... You know mine. [Instrumental Break — dark piano, low strings, muted trumpet] [Spoken over instrumental] You asked me once if I'd ever let somebody else decide. Remember? [pause] I decided something tonight. [Final Chorus — powerful, darker] You weren't expecting me But I'm exactly where I need to be The candles can keep burning And the fire can stay free You can pour another glass of wine You can smile and play along But this time when the door closes I'm the one who knows what's wrong You said the cabin keeps what you don't But here's what you forgot— [band drops] Some things don't stay buried. [full band returns] You weren't expecting me And now the truth is at the door You thought you'd found another stranger You could make disappear But I'm not leaving frightened And I'm not leaving blind Tonight the hunter changed positions— [beat] And you're running out of time. [Outro — piano, rain ambience] [Spoken, male] The detectives came three days later. Asked if I'd seen her. I said... “No.” [pause] They asked if I'd been to the cabin. I said... “Never.” [pause] Then one of them looked at me strangely. “Sir...” “You seem awfully familiar with the place.” [soft piano] I smiled. “Funny thing about that.” [beat] “I built it.” [final piano chord] And I wasn't expecting company either.
