[INTRO – soft piano + bells] Mmm… [VERSE 1] We used to wrap up, walk the street Sing our carols in the cold and sleet Now I say, “Sing,” they smile at me Then look back down at a tiny screen [CHORUS] I want Christmas like it used to be All of us talking round the same old tree No phones glowing on your knees Just bad old jokes and memories I don’t need a perfect scene on TV I just want Christmas like it used to be [VERSE 2] We used to put the dinner down One big plate for everyone around Now it’s “not for him” and “not for she” Four different pans on the old stove top for tea [CHORUS] I want Christmas like it used to be All of us talking round the same old tree No phones glowing on your knees Just bad old jokes and memories I don’t need a perfect scene on TV I just want Christmas like it used to be [VERSE 3] Christmas used to wait for winter’s start Now it’s in the shops with the summer carts By the time the lights are on our street I’ve heard that same song on repeat [CHORUS] I want Christmas like it used to be All of us talking round the same old tree No phones glowing on your knees Just bad old jokes and memories I don’t need a perfect scene on TV I just want Christmas like it used to be [BRIDGE] So tonight put your phone face-down Sing one song while we’re all still round Look at me, not the glowing blue That’s the Christmas gift I want from you [FINAL CHORUS] I want Christmas like it used to be All of us laughing round the same old tree No phones glowing on your knees Just tired old songs and memories I don’t need a perfect scene on TV I just want Christmas like it used to be [OUTRO – hum chorus melody, soft bells fade]
