[Verse 1] They drew a line across the wall and called the matter closed White paint dried beneath the lamps where no one ever goes The level slept inside its case the numbers all agreed But something underneath the white was moving with the heat [Refrain] The grain remains The grain remains [Instrumental] [Verse 2] There’s a shadow where the picture hung a key without a door A name beneath another name beneath another more Someone filled the little holes and swept away the dust But every winter finds the place that summer learned to trust [Refrain] The grain remains The grain remains [Instrumental — guitar] [Verse 3] The crack appeared three rooms away thin as a strand of hair No one heard the timber turn No one saw it there They measured from the painted edge and found the measure true The wall was square The line was straight The crack went somewhere new [Bridge] Under the paint under the name under the number under the same Something remembers the shape of the rain Something remembers [Long instrumental passage] [Final Verse] Morning found the picture straight the hallway clean and still Light came through the eastern glass and climbed across the sill No alarms No warning lights No reason to explain Only a corner lifting white and underneath— the grain [Outro] The grain remains The grain remains The grain remains For now.
