During her routine charging, Alice experienced a vision. She saw herself standing upon the shore of a roaring river, water surging past, threatening to sweep away any who dared its depths. A thunderstorm raged around her, drenching the land and rumbling the skies. On the far side of the riverbank Alice could perceive a figure: a woman shrouded in light. Only two blackened eyes stared back. “Say my name, you know it well.” All at once, Alice came to know this figure, as if she’d know them all her life. The one who left her the book. The one who could lead her to the secrets of faith. “Say my name, you know it well.” All she would have to do was cross the river and reach the other side. There was no other way. But somehow, Alice knew she could do it. “Say my name, you know it well.” But first, she would need to escape Master Odain. The man that purchased her, made her his slave.
