TIME 003 – Brass, Ivory and Crystal | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller led them onward through the passage to his room, Where lamps revealed a framework rising strangely through the gloom. The guests fell still before it as its polished fittings shone, A full-sized engine standing where no common craft had grown. (Verse 2) Its bars of brass were burnished and its ivory handles gleamed, While crystal rods caught every spark the laboratory beamed. A saddle rested at its heart between the ordered frame, A vehicle for ages that no timetable could name. (Chorus) The brass and ivory glittered in the cold electric light, While crystal caught the lamplight and returned it sharp and bright. The little model's promise now stood towering in the room, A doorway built for centuries beyond the present gloom. (Verse 3) They circled round the engine with suspicion in their stare, And searched for hidden trickery among the levers there. The Traveller explained the parts with confidence and pride, And showed them where a single man would mount the frame and ride. (Verse 4) The sceptics touched the fittings and examined every brace, Yet nothing in its workmanship betrayed a common case. No stage concealed the mechanism, no mirror masked the view, The strange machine was solid, and its workmanship was true. (Chorus) The brass and ivory glittered in the cold electric light, While crystal caught the lamplight and returned it sharp and bright. The little model's promise now stood towering in the room, A doorway built for centuries beyond the present gloom. (Bridge) The theory they had questioned now possessed a weight and form, A crafted thing of metal standing silent, strange, and warm. Their laughter faded slowly as they studied every line, For madness looked less certain in that laboratory shine. (Outro) The Traveller watched their faces as they gathered by the frame, Still knowing disbelief would never quite remain the same. Before them stood the instrument that challenged place and clime, Of brass and ivory, crystal, built to carry man through time.
