The Foggy Dew

[Verse 1] You stood by the gate With your coat half-buttoned Rain in the yard And mud on your boots Your mother said, stay Your father said, go I watched your hand shake On the iron post [Pre-Chorus] And the road kept calling Past the blackthorn hedges Past the loan of light Past the harbor smoke [Chorus] Go on, my love Go on, my love I’ll keep your name By the stone wall Go on, my love Go on, my love Till the fog lifts And you come home [Verse 2] The ferry was late By the mouth of the river You laughed at the wind Like it owed you more I tucked in your scarf At the bend in the lane And the gulls turned white Over Carrick shore [Pre-Chorus] Now the cup on the shelf And the chair by the fire Hold a little shape Of the life you knew [Chorus] Go on, my love Go on, my love I’ll keep your name By the stone wall Go on, my love Go on, my love Till the fog lifts And you come home [Bridge] If the years wear thin And the lanes forget us I’ll still hear your step On the gravel line Through the cold rain’s veil Through the ash and dawn I will meet you there At the turning time [Final Chorus] Go on, my love Go on, my love I’ll keep your name By the stone wall Go on, my love Go on, my love Till the fog lifts And you come home
