The Buried Giant (Part II: The Unearthing)

V6

The great plain is wide, the earth is cold and grey Axl, we must go before our thoughts decay Through the peat, the marsh, where the silent ones hide Are we travelers or just ghosts side by side? A shadow-shroud upon this ancient, broken land Querig’s venom-breath, a quiet, numbing hand We move through a world where the past cannot weep A shallow grave where all our terrors sleep. "But are you sure you wish to remember all?" When the mist recedes and the ancient giants fall? "If we have no memories of the love we swore, How do we know we loved in the days before?" A thread of smoke, a dragon’s heavy sigh, Under a blind and empty Saxon sky. Sir Gawain’s rusty iron clatters in the dark The warrior-monk Wistan seeks a sudden spark To slaughter the beast, to let the hatreds bleed But forgetfulness was the peace we didn't need Will the old war awaken when the fog clears away? Will we look at each other with dread and dismay? The boatman waits on the water, cold and deep, Only one can cross if the promise we cannot keep. The giant is buried, the soil begins to shake. The mist is gone. What will we do when we finally awake? Axl... Beatrice... The water is cold.
