You hit record like it's nothing I hear the room behind your voice A chair scrape, a laugh you didn't mean to keep You hit record like it's nothing I hear the room behind your voice A chair scrape, a laugh you didn't mean to keep You say "just one more line" and I already know We're not writing a song tonight We're writing us and calling it a draft You talk like the clock isn't running I talk like I don't notice Both of us lying in a key that sounds pretty If anybody heard this tape They'd think it's just another late-night mess They wouldn't hear the part Where you come back after it drops And pick up in the middle of my sentence This is off the record, baby Not for the radio, not for the room Just the version of me that only talks to you Off the record, off the clock You write the hook, I live the cost Off the record, off the clock You write the hook, I live the cost If they only heard the chorus They'd never know what we lost This is off the record You want a title, I want a minute You want a chorus that can survive the morning I want the part where you forget You're making something And just talk You say "don't make it generic" Like I haven't been collecting every scrap of us The missed movie The breakfast you promised The way you get mean when you're tired And soft two messages later That's not a metaphor That's just Tuesday with you If anybody heard this tape They'd ask who hurt who first They wouldn't hear the quiet After you say my name wrong on purpose Just to see if I'm still here This is off the record, baby Not for the radio, not for the room Just the version of me that only talks to you Off the record, off the clock You write the hook, I live the cost If they only heard the chorus They'd never know what we lost This is off the record You can put it in Suno You can dress it up in 95 BPM You can make it sound like a fight Or a love song Or both But the real one Is you saying "I'll be right back" And meaning it Even when the line goes dead This is off the record, baby Keep it out of the clean version Leave the argument in Leave the laugh in Leave the part where you ask for another song Like that's how you say stay Off the record Just us Just this Don't put my name on the file When you come back Start where we left off I already know the melody
