When The Bell Rings

V6

[spoken softly, distant clock ticking] There comes a moment in life that rings like a bell. Not always from a tower. Not always loud enough for anyone else to hear. Sometimes it comes in the silence after everyone has gone home. Sometimes while staring at the ceiling in the middle of the night. Sometimes while living the same day you have lived a hundred times before. And suddenly... something rings. [one distant bell] For one beautiful, frightening moment... you are awake. Not awake from sleep. Awake to your own life. [pause] You realize: I am here. I am alive. These are my choices. These are my days. And they are passing. [soft ticking] My brothers and sisters... I believe God gives us such moments. Sometimes He allows the world to become quiet enough that we finally hear the truth whispering inside us. There is a light given to mankind. The Light of Christ. It points us toward goodness, truth, and God. And sometimes... that light becomes a bell. [bell] Wake up. Not because God hates the life you have lived. Because He knows the life you could yet live. [pause] We speak of life as though it is waiting for us. "When things calm down..." "When I am less afraid..." "When I finally become who I am supposed to be..." Then I will live. But time does not wait. It takes a Tuesday. Then a Wednesday. Then another winter. Another birthday. And one day we discover that while we waited for life to begin... life was happening. [clock stops] That realization can frighten us. But some fears are alarms. And awakening is not condemnation. When God wakes a soul, He does not simply say, "Look how much time you wasted." He says, "Look. You still have time." [gentle music enters] This is why repentance is such a beautiful doctrine. Repentance is not merely punishment for yesterday. It is turning. Turning toward Christ. Turning toward home. Turning your heart toward the person God knows you can become. Alma spoke of a mighty change of heart. Not merely better habits. A changed heart. A different desire. A different direction. [pause] God does not force that change. He gave us agency, the sacred power to choose. The bell may ring. The Spirit may whisper. Christ may stand at the door. But eventually... your hand must reach for the handle. [quiet bell] Perhaps your bell has already rung. Perhaps someone left. Perhaps a prayer was answered. Perhaps a prayer seemed unanswered. Or perhaps nothing dramatic happened. Perhaps one morning you simply thought... I cannot keep living this way. [pause] Listen carefully. That sentence does not always mean despair. Sometimes... it is the beginning of repentance. Because another sentence can follow it: I can live differently. [music warms] You cannot return to yesterday. Mercifully... you do not need to. Christ does not ask you to repair time. He asks you to give Him your heart now. Today. This hour. This breath. The gospel is filled with people who woke up late. Prodigals. Doubters. Sinners. People who finally saw themselves clearly and chose another road. Heaven did not say, "You should have arrived sooner." Heaven rejoiced because they came home. [pause] So when your bell rings... listen. Ask yourself: Who am I becoming? What receives the best of my time? What must I forgive? What must I leave behind? And then ask: Lord... what would Thou have me do? [long pause] Then do one thing. Not everything. One thing. Pray. Apologize. Forgive. Open the scriptures. Ask for help. Return. Begin. Take one step toward Christ. Because conversion rarely happens all at once. Often... it sounds like footsteps. One. Then another. Then another. Until one day you look behind you and realize the person who heard the bell is no longer the person standing here. [soft bells] My brothers and sisters... mortality is temporary. That is not darkness. That is what gives the morning meaning. Your choices matter because time moves. Your love matters. Your repentance matters. Today can become different from yesterday. So when something deep within you awakens... when eternity seems close enough that you can almost hear it... listen. [one clear bell] Perhaps God is not announcing the end of your life. Perhaps... He is announcing its beginning. [quietly] Rise. Choose. Turn toward the light. Christ is still there. And if you can hear the bell... it is not too late. [final bell] It is time to wake. And it is time... to live.
