Circle in the Dunes

Before the Nile, before the throne We watched the stars, and stood alone In barren fields where no life grew We marked the sky with points we knew Sirius rose, and so did rain We danced for water, prayed through pain A circle formed where none should be A map of time none else could see In the dunes, we drew the line Between the stars and humankind When all was dust, we still believed In what the sky would one day leave The desert takes, the desert hides But stones remain where truth resides They faced the heavens, cold and clear To track the gods that once were near In the dunes, we drew the line A sacred clock, a hidden sign Forgotten now, but once divine We read the stars—they read the time Now winds erase what we designed The silence deafens humankind But under sand, the circle stays Still counting down the flood of days
