Pretty Words Again Tomorrow
Tomorrow, again I’ll say all the pretty words At least I’m not broken enough to stop pretending yet The face in the window looked a little like a stranger I practiced how to smile but the tear marks got in the way “I’m okay” is such a convenient piece of cloth I place it over every torn place and walk like nothing shows The things I want the most are the ones I never name If I get too close to them I might not find my way back Pretty words again tomorrow I line them up and cross the night If I said the real thing out loud someone would have to hurt with me Pretty words again tomorrow I play the gentle one again With the kind of face that doesn’t need to say hold me A promise is a little fire even after it goes out I thought I’d be fine as long as I never touched the heat I say I’m not waiting then keep looking at the time Only this ridiculous habit still remembers me too well I thought I had closed it with something clean and kind But the room inside my chest is still a mess at midnight Pretty words again tomorrow I breathe like I know what is right The things I wanted most are the ones I turn into jokes Pretty words again tomorrow I keep them where no one can reach That one lonely word falls asleep again deep in my throat Who decided I was the strong one? Who laughed and called me the woman who never falls? The truth is if someone reached for me I might cry a little before I took their hand Pretty words again tomorrow I’ll place them in the morning light Even the fact that I loved you I’ll fold it neatly with a smile Pretty words again tomorrow and somehow I’ll still breathe Without saying I wanted to be held I’ll let today come to an end Tomorrow, again I’ll say all the pretty words At least I’m not broken enough to stop pretending yet
