The First Echo (WSR-57 - The First Radar)
[Verse 1] There was a room with the lights turned low And a sweep of light moving soft and slow Built to watch the skies for ships and planes To warn of danger crossing through the rain The operators knew what the screen should show Steel in the distance, a signal below But then came a mark that shouldn't be there A ghost in the darkness, hanging in the air [Pre-Chorus] "What's that there?" Someone asked aloud "That shouldn't be on the screen" They watched it fade They watched it return Then watched the weather come rolling in [Chorus] It was the first echo Calling through the rain A little light upon a screen That changed the way we saw the storm Built to watch for danger It found another kind A way to see what lay ahead Before it reached the people blind [Verse 2] So somebody started keeping notes Marking the hours, marking the roads When the strange returns appeared again And what the sky was doing then They noticed a pattern beneath the noise The ghost kept coming before the rain Before the thunder crossed the distant fields Before the storm announced itself Could it be more than interference? More than a fault inside the machine? Could something other than steel and weapons Be hiding somewhere in between? [Pre-Chorus] They'd built it to find an enemy But what if it could find the rain? What if those scattered, restless echoes Were the weather speaking through the machine? [Chorus] It was the first echo Calling through the rain A little light upon a screen That changed the way we saw the storm Built to watch for danger It found another kind A way to see what lay ahead Before it reached the people blind [Verse 3] The pictures were faint The signals strange The answers came with questions they had yet to name No colors dancing on a modern map No perfect picture of the storm Just patient eyes and scattered marks And someone trying to make them mean more They learned the echoes weren't just errors They were pieces of the rain And every mark they chose to follow Could become a warning someday [Bridge] A machine built to find the enemy Began to help us find the storm A signal once meant for warning Became another way to warn And someone wrote the moment down Though they could not know its worth That little note might help another Learn to read the sky above the Earth A question became a record A record became a clue A clue became another warning For people they would never know [Final Chorus] It was the first echo Small and faint and new But every storm it helped us see Brought another question through From a signal in the darkness To a warning sent ahead The sky had found another language And the machine had learned to read It was the first echo And the game had changed We didn't have the answers yet But we knew where to look for them [Outro] A little light kept moving Across the waiting screen Someone wrote it down. And years from then We would know what it had seen.
