My Pillow Knows

Verse 1 It's three in the morning. She's staring at the ceiling. Her hands begin to tremble. Her chest forgets how to breathe. Her heartbeat is racing, too loud inside her body. Her skin is covered in sweat, and she doesn't know why she's so afraid. There is no danger in the room. But her mind doesn't believe that. Pre-Chorus So she reaches through the darkness, with shaking hands, and pulls her pillow close. The only thing she knows how to hold. Chorus And she clings to her pillow like it's the only thing keeping her here. "I'm here." "It's okay." "Just breathe slowly." "You're safe." She knows it can't really speak, but somehow she hears those words inside the silence. So she holds it tighter while the tears fall quietly. Because her pillow knows what nobody else does. Verse 2 Her fingers twist into the fabric. Her whole body is shaking. She tries to count her breaths, but they keep getting lost. Her heart is beating like it's trying to escape. She presses her face into the pillow and cries without a sound. She doesn't want anyone to hear. She doesn't want anyone to ask. Pre-Chorus Because how do you explain that you're terrified when nothing is happening? How do you explain a storm nobody else can see? Chorus So she clings to her pillow until the trembling starts to slow. "I'm here." "Stay with me." "Breathe slowly." "You're not alone." Maybe it's only fabric. Maybe it's only her imagination. But tonight, it's the closest thing she has to someone telling her everything will be okay. Verse 3 She thinks about telling someone. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe someday. But then she imagines their faces. "You're overreacting." "It's all in your head." "Why are you like this?" So she keeps the words locked behind her teeth. And nobody knows how many nights she spends fighting herself in the dark. Bridge She isn't crazy. She's just scared. Scared of her own heartbeat. Scared of her own thoughts. Scared that someone might see how fragile she feels. And the pillow doesn't judge her. It doesn't ask questions. It doesn't tell her she's too much. It just stays. Chorus So she holds her pillow like a lifeline in the dark. Her hands are still shaking. Her cheeks are wet. Her breathing is uneven. But somewhere between one breath and the next, the room becomes quieter. "I'm here." "Breathe slowly." "You can get through this moment." She whispers through her tears, "Please don't leave me." And for tonight, the pillow stays in her arms. Outro Morning will come eventually. She'll wash her face. She'll hide the tiredness. She'll tell everyone she slept fine. Nobody will know. Nobody will see the pillow still wet with tears. But maybe that's why she loves it so much. Because when the whole world makes her feel like she's too much, her pillow never asks her to be anything but here.
