THE CLOWN WHO BROKE THE WORLD
[OVERTURE — THE CIRCUS ARRIVES] [Prophet — amused, spoken:] Well. Would you look at that. A court jester with military clearance. Oh, this is going to be magnificent. [MOVEMENT I — THE JESTER AND THE GLITCH] Well, look what crawled out of the royal parade! A painted-up prince of a bad masquerade! A jester with power and terrible taste, With a grin like a crime and a face full of paste! You've got the bells, I've got the glitches! You've got the crown, I've got the stitches! Two walking errors in a kingdom of fools— Oh, I do love a man who makes a mockery of rules! [Prophet laughs] You've got a laugh like a broken machine! The finest disaster I've ever seen! A walking punchline, a theatrical pest! Tell me, clown— does the Emperor know how you're dressed? [CHORUS I — A WONDERFUL MESS] Oh, what a wonderful mess! What a marvelous lack of finesse! The nobles are nervous, the soldiers distressed— Oh, what a wonderful, wonderful mess! A kingdom of order, a clown in the court! An empire of terror with terrible support! If rules are a prison, then chaos might bless— [Prophet — grinning:] Oh, what a wonderful mess! [Prophet — spoken:] I think I like you. That's usually a warning sign. [MOVEMENT II — THE JOKE HAS TEETH] You laugh at the king, you laugh at the throne. You laugh when the mighty are stripped to the bone. You laugh at the generals, the medals, the fame. You laugh at the rules and the men who proclaim— [Prophet — puzzled:] Wait. Why did that soldier stop smiling? Why did the servants look away? Why did the room go quiet when somebody mentioned Doma? [Prophet — still trying to joke:] Oh, come now. Surely the poison wasn't part of— Poison? The river? The water? The people? [Prophet — sharply:] Stop playing that. [VERSE — THE LAUGHTER DOESN'T FIT] I thought you were mocking the people in power. I thought you were pulling the teeth from the tower. I thought— No. I assumed. They weren't laughing because you were funny. They were laughing because you were dangerous. And when they stopped— you didn't. [Prophet — quiet:] That's not rebellion. That's cruelty wearing a costume. [FALSE CHORUS — THE WONDERFUL MESS] [Prophet — reluctant, almost disbelieving:] Oh, what a wonderful— What a marvelous— No. No, that's not— [Prophet:] I don't think I understand the joke. [MOVEMENT III — THE WORLD BREAKS] [Prophet — controlled, increasingly horrified:] Espers. Living beings stripped for power. Magic pulled through machinery. A civilization feeding its ambition with somebody else's existence. And there you were. Laughing. At the laboratory. At the suffering. At the people who couldn't fight back. I have seen some spectacularly irresponsible uses of power. But you— [WORLD OF RUIN — THE FALL] [Prophet — shocked, words breaking apart:] The continents— The sky— That wasn't— You moved— No. You broke— [Prophet — barely audible:] Oh. Oh, you absolute bastard. Cities. Homes. People. Names I never learned. LIVES that will never get another morning. And you're standing above the wreckage like you've finally won something. [Prophet — cold:] You didn't break the throne. You broke the people beneath it. You didn't silence the gods. You silenced the ones who never asked to be part of your performance. And you call this freedom? No. Freedom means there is still someone left to choose. [INSTRUMENTAL FRACTURE — THE BROKEN LAUGH] [MOVEMENT IV — THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US] [Prophet — close, without theatricality:] You know... For a moment, I thought we might be alike. The costumes. The laughter. The complete inability to leave a perfectly good system alone. And that is what frightened me. I've torn the heavens open. I've watched the Pattern bleed. I've been the hand that moved the pieces without asking what they need. [Prophet — melodic, pained:] I wrote the rules for LIVES I hadn't lived. I called it imagination. I learned that other people have a right to their own stories. I learned. Too late for some. Not too late to change. [CONFRONTATION — YOU HAD THE POWER] [Prophet — firm, controlled:] You had the power to make anything. Anything. A world without an empire. A world where the wounded could finally rest. A world where the living could decide what living meant. You could have opened every prison. You could have silenced every tyrant. You could have built something nobody had ever imagined. And all you could imagine was an ending. [DEFIANT REFRAIN — NOT THE SAME] I break the rules to leave a door! You break the world to leave no more! I make a Tare and let them through! You tare the sky to bury truth! We both can laugh at crowns and kings— but only one of us believes the living still deserve to sing! [orchestra and Glitch-tar strike together] [Prophet — spoken, deadly calm:] We're not the same. [MOVEMENT V — THE WORLD REFUSES TO END] [Prophet — weary, observant:] I walked through what was left. [soft strings] I found a woman planting something in poisoned soil. I found a child asking questions. I found people sharing food they barely had. And I found something you apparently couldn't understand. They were still making plans. [NEW THEME — THE UNBROKEN SIGNAL] [Prophet — melodic, slowly gathering strength:] You wanted silence. They found a song. You wanted nothing. They carried on. You shattered the heavens. You poisoned the ground. But somewhere beneath all your ruin, a heartbeat still makes a sound. They buried their dead. They remembered their names. They gathered the pieces. They started again. Not because the world was fair. Not because the pain was small. But because you couldn't make them stop caring after all. [FINAL SERMON — THE MEANING YOU COULDN'T KILL] [Prophet — powerful, clear:] You called it meaningless! They called it home! You built a monument to standing alone! You made a kingdom of ashes and fear— and still they found a reason to be here! [full band] Not every wound will heal! Not every loss can be undone! But meaning isn't yours to grant— and never yours to take from anyone! [Prophet — forceful:] You don't decide what matters! You don't decide what stays! You don't get to end their stories just because you hate the way they're made! [HARD CUT — THE LAST OBSERVATION] [Prophet — quiet, close:] They called you a god. [pause] I saw a frightened little clown who couldn't bear a world that didn't need him. The clown who broke the world. And still... [FINAL LIFT — THE WORLD LIVES] [Prophet — quietly, with certainty:] It lived. [END]
