09 - WHEN THE FIREFLIES RETURN - The Wonders

(1966 Midnight Ballad — Expanded Archives Edition) (Soft tremolo guitar, distant crickets, low organ swell) Intro Ooooh… Late summer in the air… Ooooh… (Gentle drums enter slowly) Verse 1 Old street glowing after rain Everything feels far away again Your shadow moving by the lake Like a dream still half awake Windows shining soft and gold Young hearts trying not to grow old And somewhere drifting through the dark I still feel your restless heart Pre-Chorus Some nights never really leave They just hide inside the breeze Chorus When the fireflies return And the summer starts to burn I still hear your laughter in the night When the fireflies return Every memory starts to turn Like an old song floating through the light Verse 2 Radio singing low and slow Through the trees beyond the road Your fingertips brushed against my hand Like something too small to understand Cinema lights across the town Everybody slowly winding down But underneath the midnight sky We were still too young goodbye Pre-Chorus Maybe nothing truly stays That’s what makes us miss those days Chorus When the fireflies return And the summer starts to burn I still hear your laughter in the night When the fireflies return Every memory starts to turn Like an old song floating through the light Bridge (layered harmonies, dreamy) Ooooh… Can you hear the evening call… Ooooh… Summer never stays at all… Instrumental Break (Extended melodic guitar solo with soft organ and tambourine) Verse 3 Years keep rolling like the tide Still I see you by my side Standing underneath the glow Of nights we thought would never go Every station, every sound Still somehow brings you around And in the silence after rain I almost hear your voice again Final Chorus When the fireflies return All the old emotions burn Like they never really disappeared When the fireflies return Every lonely shadow turns Into moments I still hold near When the fireflies return And the summer starts to burn Part of me goes back in time again Outro (long fading harmonies with tape hiss and distant guitar) When the fireflies return… When the fireflies return… Ooooh…
