The Ground We Break

G C Em D [Verse 1] G C Forty years of dust upon the sole Em D Chasing down a promise that we stole G C Moses watched the burning of the bush Em D Through the desert wind and silent push Am C Looking for a river running clear and sweet G D Where the soil gives life to hungry feet [Verse 2] G C Where the water from the well is cold and pure Em D And the food upon the table keeps you sure G C No bought-off kings in golden halls of greed Em D Just honest hands that serve the people's need Am C Where the roof above your head don’t break your back G D And no one’s left forgotten on the track [Pre-Chorus] Am C We’ve been marching in the dark so long G D Carrying the fragments of an ancient song Am C If the map is blank and the valley's dry Em D We won’t look up at a silent sky [Chorus] G C If the Promised Land ain’t waiting on the other side Em D We’ll build it right here where the shadows hide! G C Where freedom and peace are the air we breathe Em D And love is the harvest of the seeds we leave Am C Where kindness is law and a smile ain’t sold G D More precious than silver, richer than gold C D G If we can’t find Eden... we’ll build it on this road! [Verse 3] G C Through the bitter thorns and the canyon rock Em D Past the wolves that circle round the flock G C We walked through hunger, we walked through pain Em D Praying for the healing of the summer rain Am C Now look around at every tired face G D There is holy ground in every place [Pre-Chorus] Am C We’ve been marching in the dark so long G D Carrying the fire to keep us strong Am C If the map is blank and the valley's dry Em D We won’t just wait for the sun to die [Chorus] G C If the Promised Land ain’t waiting on the other side Em D We’ll build it right here where the shadows hide! G C Where freedom and peace are the air we breathe Em D And love is the harvest of the seeds we leave Am C Where kindness is law and a smile ain’t sold G D More precious than silver, richer than gold C D Em If we can’t find Eden... we’ll build it on this road! [Bridge] Em C No more waiting on a shepherd from above G D The greatest revolution is human love Em C No more borders made of cruelty and fear G D Brother, sister, wipe away the tear Am Lay the cornerstone, turn the sod C D Living with each other is our walk with God!
