[Verse 1] We came down with a bucket and a red plastic spade You wore a paper crown I wore the shade We packed that wet gold by the old blue chair You said, “Build it tall, Dad” I said, “We’re there” [Verse 2] You tucked in the windows with a shell and a twig I shaped every wall like we were making it big I shaped every wall like we were making it big A moat around the kingdom a path to the sea You laughed when the seagulls stole crumbs from me [Pre-Chorus] And the walls kept rising higher than my hand You drew little flags there stuck right in the sand Then you stepped back smiling like you knew the plan Said, “Don’t make it forever” I said, “I understand” [Chorus] Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Look what we made from a little thing Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Hold it while the tide rolls in Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King I built it for you, you built me too Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Let it go, let it go right through [Verse 3] Later on the water crept up slow and thin Took the little front gate took the moat within You held my wet hand when the tower leaned Like we were watching time from the edge of a dream [Pre-Chorus] And the gulls kept calling over our heads You said, “It’s still ours even after it’s dead” I felt my grip loosen in the salt and wind Like the whole wide harbor was teaching me again [Chorus] Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Look what we made from a little thing Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Hold it while the tide rolls in Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King I built it for you, you built me too Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Let it go, let it go right through [Bridge] The first wall fell then the next one did Your crown tipped sideways and you grinned that grin We didn’t chase it we just stood there still With the sea taking pieces by its own soft will [Final Chorus] Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Look what we made from a little thing Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Hold it while the tide rolls in Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King I built it for you, you built me too Sandcastle King, Sandcastle King Let it go, let it go right through [Outro] You took my hand and the shore went gold No castle lasts but the love we hold Sandcastle King Sandcastle King
