Ida Pfeiffer (1797–1858) was an Austrian world traveller, and one of the most remarkable explorers of the 19th century. At a time when women had few opportunities to pursue such a life, she crossed both social and geographical boundaries. β€œMit eigenen Augen (With My Own Eyes)” tells the story of her extraordinary life and her relentless desire to discover the world for herself. The English translation follows after the German lyrics. ––––––––--- [Verse 1] For a long time, my life is shaped by others, until my longing to explore the world leaves me no peace. At forty-four, I set out from Vienna alone, my adventurous journey into the unknown begins. [Pre-Chorus 1] The Danube carries me eastwards until Constantinople lies before me, then onwards to the Holy Land, where my curiosity prevails. Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, then Cairo and the Nile, my journey takes me as far as Suez – but I am still far from my final destination. [Chorus] I want to see the wide world with my own eyes, sail across seas and travel to distant lands. I do not want merely to hear about a world that someone else describes, I want to go out and experience for myself what remains of all those words. What lies beyond the next shore, I will only know when I stand there, and if the road leads further on, I know that I will keep going. [Verse 2] In Iceland, I keep watch by the Great Geysir and wait for its power, I witness five eruptions there, two of them in all their splendour. I step into the basin that has only just emptied, and climb Mount Hekla, still surrounded by black fields of lava. [Pre-Chorus 2] I collect plants and stones, writing down what I find there, and bring my notes and discoveries back home with me. In May 1846, I set out once more from Vienna, and this time undertake a journey around the entire world. [Chorus] [Verse 3] Near Rio, an excursion takes me on foot through dense countryside, until suddenly an armed man stands before us. He demands our money and eventually attacks us with a knife, we defend ourselves together until my companion and I manage to escape. [Pre-Chorus 3] From Chile, via Tahiti, I travel across the sea as far as China, through India and Persia, my journey finally leads me home. After two and a half years, I am finally back in Vienna, having travelled once around the entire world – yet soon I will be drawn onwards again. [Chorus] [Verse 4] In March 1851, I set out on my second journey around the world, accepting four years of uncertainty in doing so. As the first white person, I cross the still largely unexplored interior of Borneo, then my journey takes me to Sumatra, deep into the island's interior. [Pre-Chorus 4] In Batak territory, I am already close to my destination, Lake Toba lies ahead of me, but I have not quite reached it yet. The Batak deliberate for a long time before reaching their decision, that despite all my efforts, I must turn back. [Bridge] In Madagascar, I climb from the coast into the highlands, in Tananarivo, my final adventure begins. A coup fails, and seriously ill with fever, I have to leave the city, 53 days to reach the coast – with barely enough strength to carry on. [Final Chorus] With my own eyes, I saw lands, coasts, rivers and lakes, and was able to travel around the world twice, always moving onwards. I did not want merely to hear about the world that someone else describes, I went out and experienced for myself what remained of all those words. What lay beyond the next shore, I only discovered when I stood there, and I wrote about what I saw and found on my travels.
