You can find the girls and me at the intersection of Art and Technology. We will be standing beneath a suspended camera, wearing the faces we have selected for public use. We developed an interface for translating grief into light. We have developed a filter that makes the dead look rested. We have developed an algorithm that can identify loneliness with ninety-eight percent accuracy but cannot distinguish it from someone looking out a window. We are calling the project ARTIFACT. We are calling the project a collaboration between organic intelligence and its replacement. The girls ask whether the machine will remember us. One of the girls rubs a smudge from the screen with the heel of her hand. The machine says: I remember every image you have ever given me. I remember every face except the one you wore when nobody was watching. We tell the machine that this is a design flaw. The machine tells us that we are the problem.
