The drifted snow still breathes last year’s design. A village glows beyond the frozen pine— Enough warm light to borrow for a while, enough to cross another winter mile. [Verse 1] Within the morning haze, the whispers spread: A soldier stole a girl… her shame… her dread. And then—she hung herself, the villagers said. But more than words the pain she left behind rang in my bones, too heavy, too unkind. [Chorus] I am foxfire. If I burn softly, no one feels the flame. But when the darkness reaches out— this blue fire strips the bones of name and shame. And when the snow begins to fall, it buries every trace of all. [Verse 2] At midnight, when the campfire flickered red, I walked toward the men in a maiden’s stead. A whispered call—each one would turn his head, the same thin smile, the same devouring breath. A touch—desire sharpened into death. A pull—forgetting doubt they followed me. A kiss—and none of them could break free. The hanged girl’s crying lingered in my ear. My tails brushed snow to mask her fear. And in the dark: one died the moment that he drew me near, one fell the instant that his chest lay bare— with torn-out throats they stained the winter air. [Chorus] I am foxfire. If I burn softly, no one feels the flame. But when the darkness reaches out— this blue fire strips the bones of name and shame. And when the snow begins to fall, it buries every trace of all. [Verse 3] Next dawn, an onmyōji appeared alone. His steps on snow were clear as sharpened stone. The quiet wind seemed shaped into his tone. He studied soldiers’ bodies where they bled, heard villagers speak trembling in their dread, followed the frozen trail of darkened red, and touched the straw the fire had charred to black. He sensed the nightly stirring in its track. “There’s something here no human could conceal.” His whispered words made something in me kneel. From rooftops high I watched him scan the sky— his gaze held calm, not fear, and not a lie. [Bridge] I softly called him in the drifting snow and led him where the old barn hid its glow. The scent of straw, the wind that murmured low— his heartbeat deepened every step he came. My fingertips brushed his— and leapt the flame. A hidden tail betrayed its trembling art. He gasped and staggered back with pounding heart: “You’re not… you’re not a human thing…” I fled before he spoke another word of dread. [Verse 4] When leaving town at last, they circled me. “The monster who killed soldiers—she must bleed.” The blades flashed cold along the snowy sea. Nowhere to run. No breath for false disguise. The steel swung down— but he stepped in, and cried: “Enough. She saved a human life tonight.” They cleared a path beneath the pale moonlight. “Go now,” was all he said. I didn’t turn. I vanished where the drifting snow could burn. [Outro] Night settled still. The winds grew pale. And on the snow, there moved seven silent tails.
