What Could Go wrong?

[Intro — bar noise: glasses clink, voices overlap, someone hollers] [gruff voice yells] “Tell it, man!” [Acoustic guitar strums, raw and loose, setting a punk acoustic vibe] So there I was in Afghanistan, Dust and stone, not just endless sand. Barren peaks, red with ancient blood, History carved in violence’s flood. Some of you get it, war’s the same old rift, Just another tale, another shift. [Verse 2 , guitar plucks sharpen, crowd hoots softly] Out west near Her-at, cursed and dry, Ever been? Nice in winter, right? [crowd laughs] Ain’t no resort, just dirt and pain, Cordite whiff like a ghost’s refrain. Brief came down, wasn’t for a fight, Humanitarian, yeah, that’s the slight. [Pre-Chorus , guitar strums build, crowd stomps] What could go wrong? Roll the dice, sing the song. [Verse 3, beat picks up, acoustic gets gritty] Toys and rice, books for the kids, “Spread some hope!”, brass talking big. Route looked clean, just a dusty track, Nothing special… ’cept the attack. Week before, boom shook the ground, Two didn’t make it, ghosts hang around. [Verse 4, somber picking, crowd murmurs] The Army’s best is its stubborn roll, Through blood and bone, it claims its toll. The worst is true, it don’t look back, Man steps up when fate’s off track. We hate it, sure, but that’s the deal, Mission’s on, no time to feel. [Chorus , anthemic stomp, crowd chants along, electric guitar creeps in] Tempting fate with a grin so wide, “What could go wrong?” we yell with pride. The medic always charges in, no doubt, Best at the job, till fate checks out. Army rolls on, through blood and bone, Incompetence reigns on its throne. [Verse 5: driving riff, raspy half-joking bite] I said that day, “Come on, let’s roll, They won’t hit twice, same damn hole!” Doc just glared, didn’t like my take, Fear in his eyes, like he’d break. “Obviously,” I laughed, “we’re fine!” Tempting fate’s my favorite line. [Verse 6: beat drops, sarcastic snarl] Nothing happened, no blast that day, But we lost our doc some other way. Traded for an “upgrade,” fresh and green, Left his rifle, worst I’ve seen. Fear you can fight, blasts you can dodge, But dumbass brass? That’s sabotage. [Bridge: guitar distortion roars, crowd yells chaotic, punk energy] [Overlapping shouts, feedback squeals] “What could go wrong?” , EVERYTHING! “What could go wrong?” , EVERYTHING! Tempt the devil, roll the dice, Fate’s a bastard, pays no price! [Chorus : louder, grungy, crowd roars along] Tempting fate with a grin so wide, “What could go wrong?” we yell with pride. The medic always charges in, no doubt, Best at the job, till fate checks out. Army rolls on, through blood and bone, Incompetence reigns on its throne. [Verse 7 : hushed, biting, acoustic creeps back] He confessed at 3 A.M., piss-drunk, Rifle left in the tent, that punk. “Oops,” he said, like it’s all a game, Another round, another shame. That’s a yarn for another night, When beer’s cheap and fate’s in sight. [Outro: bar noise swells: laughter turns uneasy, clinks echo like distant shots] [Guitar fades with grungy distortion, one last raspy chuckle] What could go wrong? Just keep singing that song.
