[Spoken Intro – Zeke] “Claire… you want a story?” “Alright. But don’t blame me when this one gets strange.” [Verse 1] It was the winter that would not leave, when corn ran low and rivers froze. The old men watched an empty sky, the young ones counted what remained. And Musa lived beyond the fires, too proud for every offered hand. She said no heart beneath that sky could ever make her understand. Then somewhere in the frozen night a summer sound began to rise. One little song. One wooden flute. And mischief dancing through the ice. [Chorus] Play, Kokopelli, play, let the winter hear your song. Bring a little summer where the cold has stayed too long. Play, Kokopelli, play, with your secrets on your back. You never give exactly what the foolish think they ask. [Verse 2] He stood outside her windowpane, a crooked shadow in the snow. “I carry everything you want, if you are brave enough to know.” She should have closed the door on him. She knew it even then. But no one ever made a legend by doing what they should have done. So Musa laughed. The stranger played. And winter waited outside the door. [Chorus] Play, Kokopelli, play, let the frozen rivers run. Steal a little midnight, bring the promise of the sun. Play, Kokopelli, play, you crooked wandering friend. With you nobody ever knows where gift and trouble end. [Bridge] By morning he was gone. Of course he was. No footprints in the snow. Musa cursed his name and threw the door wide open... Then forgot what she was angry for. The snow was running from the roofs. Green corn broke through the ground. The river laughed between the stones. And birds were everywhere. Spring had come to town. [Final Chorus] Play, Kokopelli, play, then disappear before the dawn. Leave the people wondering what was taken, what was born. Play, Kokopelli, play, you never leave things as they were. A song beneath the window. A little trouble. And suddenly spring is everywhere. [Outro] And later... when the village counted rather more children than before... Well. That part of the story, Kokopelli probably considered a bonus.
