The Bonobo Church The Bonobo Church is a bizarre heretical cult founded by the mysterious healer Bonobobo Bobonbo. Its philosophy is simple: Throw away conventional values, liberate human desire, and seek unity between humanity and the universe. Its motto is: “Fanatical devotion to a heretical faith is the ultimate self-liberation and the highest form of relaxation!” The Church operates a small rural community of several dozen followers somewhere in Japan. It is occasionally mistaken for a love hotel. The Church does not demand that its members believe in a particular god. Instead, it challenges conventional ideas about money, beauty, shame, relationships, work, and happiness. Followers abandon their real names, their pasts, and their shame, taking absurd and vulgar religious names instead. They donate their entire monthly income, but their savings and personal property are left untouched. “What if you quit and then you’re broke?” The Church provides food, housing, medical care, alcohol, and other forms of personal support. When members go to work, they receive packed lunches, drinks, snacks, and cigarettes upon request. Its rooms are small, its alcohol is cheap, but the rice is freshly cooked. Conventional lookism is considered an enemy. Through exercise, diet, beauty advice, fashion, and other training, followers learn to see themselves and one another as attractive and desirable. This is, essentially, religious lookism. Romance and marriage are permitted with mutual consent. Nobody may possess or exclusively control another person. Every individual has an absolute right to refuse. If you want to leave, you may leave. If you want to come back, you are always welcome. Children are not members of the Church. Followers who start families suspend their religious activities until their children become independent. The Church also has a natural hot-spring bathhouse and a sauna. Financially, the organization is basically a disaster. Fortunately, it has an extremely wealthy sponsor with pockets as deep as Kankichi Ryotsu from KochiKame. Without him, the Church would probably collapse. ⸻ Fellarina Oiny-Tsuykey Coituskie Real name: Ichiko Tanaka. Age 26. Ichiko was born to a banker father and an investment analyst mother. Her mother was obsessively devoted to education and subjected Ichiko to severe academic abuse while denying and suppressing her femininity. Ichiko graduated from a national university but failed the entrance examination for the University of Tokyo, after which the abuse became even worse. She obtained financial qualifications and found a prestigious corporate job, but the workload and stress eventually caused psychogenic depression. Hospitalization was recommended, but her parents refused to consent. Around this time, her parents divorced. With no improvement in sight, her desperate mother sent her to a mysterious “miracle healer” named Bonobobo Bobonbo. The name was so unbelievably stupid that Ichiko became curious. She went there out of sheer desperation. That was the beginning of Fellarina Oiny-Tsuykey Coituskie. ⸻ Bonobobo Bobonbo His real name is unknown. He is an eccentric old man who supposedly trained deep in the mountains of India and mastered the secrets of yoga. 155 cm tall. 90 kg. He is an expert in yoga, hypnosis, acupuncture, and traditional massage, and possesses extensive knowledge of both Eastern and modern medicine. He has a shiny bald head, enormous wandering eyes, a huge round nose, and a long white beard. He treats everything from stiff shoulders and back pain to insomnia, anxiety, and psychological distress, combining counseling with physical treatment. His clients trust him deeply, and some eventually become his followers. Because of his suspicious appearance and ridiculous name, rumors about him abound. He has been called a fraud, a con artist, a quack, and even Rasputin. Ichiko’s mother was introduced to him through one of his followers, hoping he could somehow restore her daughter to working life. Instead, treating Ichiko gave Bonobobo the idea for the Bonobo Church. Is he a genius or an idiot? A philosopher or a lunatic? Nobody knows. His favorite food is grilled dried round herring with freshly cooked white rice. Natto is also acceptable.
