In hallowed spaces, a fellowship gathers solemn Bread as His flesh, and juice, a crimson red The Lord's Supper is prepared, we form into columns And ponder as we wait, remembering that Christ was dead Though Gospel words may sometimes lose their weight A different scene, more vivid fills my thought Long before this feast, three warriors tempted fate An ancient scene of love amid the battle fought David's parched plea, in Adullam's dim cave For Bethlehem's well, where Philistines did stay Three mighty men, through darkest peril, brave Brought water back, returned without delay But David paused, the precious draught held high, "For this mere thirst, men's lives were put at stake?" ("Their very blood!") He breathed, with troubled sigh. He poured it out, for love and honor's sake. What! (He wouldn't drink it) .... So Christ's own words within my spirit blend "This cup, My blood, poured out that you might live" "My body broken, for your sins' own end" A sacrifice, His boundless love did give My life of ease, my comforts full each day Yet sin's dark debt had left me all alone His grace descends, where judgment had held sway ("My body given") ... he offers to atone Unlike those men, who fought and returned whole Christ faced the cross, enduring bitter shame He knew our hearts, for whom He paid the toll Would falter, doubt, and fail to call His name The tension grips, as I this bread behold His broken body, can its worth be told? Yet know I this: No other hope remains! ... His love compels, despite my guilty stains Like David's dread, to contemplate the cost The cracker waits, within my trembling hand But guilt in me, reminds me I am lost My only hope, my Savior's strange command Unless you eat, and drink this life I give No life you'll find, His words still speak to me I cannot grasp such cost, yet must believe His love implores, my hopeless heart set free "In rememberance, do this", reads His word And in this act, my humbled heart distraught I take again, the gift so freely poured, The broken bread is dry, my eyes are not
