The Dream (Acoustic)

I grew up watching tired hands Turn empty rooms into a home A set of keys A little land A place to call their own They said work hard Save what you can Someday you’ll be fine I did everything they told me Still I’m falling behind Every time I get closer The distance starts to change Every time I find the answer They rewrite the rules again What happened to the dream They promised we could have? A home to call our own A life that wouldn’t crack I’m working harder than ever Just trying not to drown While everything I’m reaching for Keeps moving farther out I still believe somehow There’s something left to find But it’s hard to see the dream When you’re trying to survive The numbers climb The years move fast The bills arrive The money won’t last Friends keep waiting Kids delayed Too afraid To make a plan We used to dream of better days Now we just hope to stand I don’t need a life of riches I don’t need my name in lights I just want a home that’s mine And time to live my life A place to raise a family Something real that I can keep Wasn’t that the promise? Wasn’t that the dream? I’m still holding to the dream Even if it’s barely there A home to call our own A life with room to breathe I’ll keep fighting for tomorrow Even when it lets me down Because I have to believe There’s still a way out The dream may bend It may bring me to my knees But I won’t let this world decide What the dream means to me I don’t need the perfect life Just something real to keep A place to raise a family And finally live the dream
