The Steady Hand
[Verse 1] Texas sun, eight, ten, 13 hours deep, or when the cold or hot has bit, The job is waiting, I don't sleep, I'm showing up to hit. Bikes and patio sets, or a brand new grill, my concentration is here, "Okay, here I go. Focus, Matt!" I banish doubt and fear. Toolbox open, parts laid out, nothing is left to chance, My body's weary, strength won't rout, I move as if to dance. I'm not distracted by the noise, my purpose is defined, I do this for my Ladies, for the blessings I can find. [Chorus] This is the rhythm of the righteous, the steady hand is true, "I'm one with the speed," quality and discipline see me through! "I'm a winner, not a loser," that's a choice I make today, "Come on, Matt, you got this for my Ladies!" I clear the path and pray! I look to God and all the Saints, Our Mother guides my sight, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, let's go! Amen!" [Verse 2] A bicycle frame up on the stand, the wrenching starts right now, No time for guesswork, I command the work and take my bow. Fast and focused, just like light, not reckless, not too slow, "Speed with discipline and quality," I watch the tension grow. The little hex key turns the screws, on every piece of wood, Assembling furniture, I choose to build this thing for good. No breaks for complaining, no retreat, just forward to the end, This honest sweat is looking sweet, a blessing God does send. Amen!" [Bridge] [Acoustic guitar focus with piano chords for reflection.] I hear the whispers of the doubt, the easy road is calling, But faith is what I think about, preventing me from falling. I push the pace, I push my will, my mind is locked and set, For my dear wife and daughters, standing still, no failure, no regret. This work is an offering, simple, clear, I give my best until, The final piece is mounted here, according to His will. [Verse 3] The final cart is loaded up, the completed work is sighted, I drain the last from my cold cup, my spirit feels ignited. Fifty jobs, a hundred builds, they stand up straight and strong, "I build like a machine," the fight was worth the cost, I did the best work that I can, no time or motion lost. The engine running, I drive home, the promise is secure, I'm never standing here alone, my victory is pure. [Outro] [A final, sustained pedal steel note fades out slowly.] Yeah. The Steady Hand. Job done. "I eat losers for breakfast." For my Ladies. Thank you, God. [©2025 By Matthew E Treviño]
