[Verse 1] I set the table for two at seven Put the good plates out like a small event The cake leaned left, but the candles behaved I checked the clock, then checked it again Your coat stayed gone from the hallway hook The icing began to lose its cool I cut one slice, then I cut a second Seems this cake has excellent judgment [Pre-Chorus] I could sit here counting forks Or call the people who know where I keep them [Chorus] Keep the cake, bring your appetite I’ve got too much frosting and a Friday night Keep the cake, let the good plates stay We’ll make a little room for the ones who came Keep the cake, pass the good knife round If the plans fell through, there’s still plenty to go around Keep the cake, keep the cake This evening’s not a loss to throw away [Verse 2] Mara brought cherries in a paper sack June brought gossip and a record back We ate the roses off the corner first Then told the truth with our mouths still full I said, “I’m fine,” and they let that pass Then poured me tea in a tiny glass Nobody tried to fix the empty chair They just pulled up close and filled the air [Pre-Chorus] The candles burned down low and sweet We found a better use for the seats [Chorus] Keep the cake, bring your appetite I’ve got too much frosting and a Friday night Keep the cake, let the good plates stay We’ll make a little room for the ones who came Keep the cake, pass the good knife round If the plans fell through, there’s still plenty to go around Keep the cake, keep the cake This evening’s not a loss to throw away [Bridge] I won’t pretend it didn’t sting Or call a missed hello a secret thing But there’s a note beside the plate “Save me a slice”—and that can wait For now, the kitchen’s warm and loud And I’m glad I asked my people round [Final Chorus] Keep the cake, bring your appetite We’ve got too much frosting for a quiet night Keep the cake, let the good plates stay There’s room at this table for the ones who came Keep the cake, pass the good knife round A little bit of sweet can turn a night around Keep the cake, keep the cake We’ll pack you a slice for the road someday [Outro] Keep the cake Save a slice Keep the cake We’re all right
