I remember that day on the subway train When I first heard the phrase "turntablism" When the record player With its diamond tip Got me feelin' like I got hit by a bus Now my goal is to make people dance and smile While I cut Mix And scratch up every style I was hungry for knowledge No time for rest 'Cause I wanted to be the best of the best I was goin' through vinyl at the record store 'Cause the used section always had so much more So many styles of music I had never seen From classical to hip-hop and everything in between I knew if I wanted to be the best I had to be an encyclopedia of music Yes The DJ booth became my home away from home And I had a love affair with my metronome I had two copies of "Tom Sawyer" by Rush And I scratched the break down and made it sound lush I made the two copies fight each other like clones I made 'em sing the melody I made 'em moan I even made 'em whisper and growl and groan My DJ controller became my microphone I used every technique My skill was vast And I went on to DJ for Johnny Cash I had a battle with the best of the best And I had so much fun But I was a mess I spilled wine all over my turntables I tried to clean it up as best as I was able Then I stepped up to the DJ booth And I told the crowd the truth I said "I'm gonna scratch and juggle and I'm gonna flex And at the end of the night You're gonna see I'm the best"
