Quarter to Midnight

Pegasus
Early 1980s Americana classic rock ballad; warm analog production; clean but slightly overdriven electric guitars with light chorus and natural reverb; steady mid-tempo groove; punchy yet relaxed drums with room ambience; melodic bass that drives the progression; subtle acoustic guitar accents for warmth; emotional, slightly weathered male vocal with a nostalgic tone; intimate verses with sparse instrumentation building into an anthemic, singalong chorus; soft background harmonies for lift; simple, memorable guitar hooks and tasteful fills between vocal lines; a short melodic guitar break before the final chorus; dynamic arrangement that grows gradually; warm, tape-saturated mix; very subtle organ or pad in the background; theme of youth, memory, missed chances, and time passing; natural, human performance; gradual fade-out with repeated vocal phrases and lingering guitar notes

[Instrumental Intro] [Verse 1] Friday night and the air smelled like rain Cut through the alley off Sycamore Lane Quarters in our pockets, holes in our jeans The arcade was the closest thing to living out our dreams [Short Instrumental Break] [Pre-Chorus] Sarah loved the Sonic machine Cherry Chapstick, faded band tee I never said a word, just fed another coin Some doors you stand outside of, some games you never join [Chorus] It was a quarter to midnight Nobody keeping score Whole gang laughing Like we’d never laughed before Nothing but time to burn And nowhere else to be Quarter to midnight Yeah, that’s all we’d ever need [Instrumental Interlude] [Verse 2] Wayne owned every record on that Galaga screen Best hands in the county, or so it seemed He shipped out in October, only wrote back for a bit Left a hole in all of us we just learned to live with [Short Instrumental Break] [Pre-Chorus] Sarah caught me looking once and almost smiled I just turned away and stared at the tile Funny how the things you almost did… Yeah, they outlast everything you did [Chorus] It was a quarter to midnight Nobody keeping score Whole gang laughing Like we’d never laughed before Nothing but time to burn And nowhere else to be Quarter to midnight Yeah, that’s all we’d ever need [Short Instrumental Break] [Bridge] It was a quarter to midnight Lights going out P.A. overhead said “We’re shuttin’ er down” All the guys were having a blast Nobody really thought It wasn’t gonna last Yeah, It won’t last [Instrumental Interlude] [Final Chorus] It was a quarter to midnight Nobody keeping score Wayne’s gone and Sarah’s gone Don’t laugh like that anymore No more time to burn Man, to go back I’d give anything But Quarter to Midnight Is gone like everything [Outro] Wish I’d said something Back when we were kids Funny what you carry And what you never did [Instrumental fade out] [Echo fade out] Quarter to midnight Yeah, it was a quarter to midnight Quarter, hmm A quarter to midnight A quarter A quarter to midnight
