Braces the Fox - No AC, Just You
The power cut out an hour ago The house is breathing wrong Wood walls holding onto heat Like they don’t wanna move on My fur’s all heavy, damp at the tips Tail stuck to the floor You say, “Yeah, this sucks,” But you don’t get up to open the door We sit on opposite sides But it doesn’t feel that way The air’s too thick for distance Everything drifts closer anyway No AC, just you And the sound of the fan Trying harder than it can No AC, just you Sweat and bad air I’d complain But I don’t care We lie on the floorboards Cause they’re cooler than the bed Your shoulder almost touching mine Every time one of us shifts instead Cicadas scream outside Like they’re losing their minds You joke about jumping in the river I laugh, then picture it, then go quiet Your fur’s lighter where the sun hit Mine’s sticking up all wrong I focus way too hard On breathing normal, acting strong No AC, just you Counting cracks in the ceiling Trying not to stare Trying not to feel it No AC, just you Too hot to pretend If this is uncomfortable I don’t want it to end Someone’s sleeping down the hall We keep our voices low Every laugh gets swallowed By the buzzing glow You stretch, I look away A second too late, too slow I tell myself it’s nothing But my tail doesn’t know No AC, just you And the space we won’t cross Every almost Every pause No AC, just you If the lights stay out all night I’ll lie here overheating And still feel alright The power comes back on Eventually, they say But I don’t move I just listen to you breathe And let the heat Stay
