Tall Ones Fall Once (Sunovision 2026)
[Intro - lone oud, close whispered vocal] Mother said: “Tall ones fall once.” So I learned the rules by heart, by hardship... Keep your mouth zipped. Don’t go first. Think it through before you move. “Tall ones fall once.” [Verse 1 - soft pulse enters] One step forward. No... Wait. The ones who run, the ones who leap, pass right through me in the street. I can long for other people but we never really meet. Holding lines - safe from notice. Miss my turn while others act. Every brave move leaves an opening. Every weakness draws attack. [Pre-Chorus - strings tightening] I want to shout, I want to reach, But I stay quiet like they preach. [Chorus 1 - heavy impact, distorted frame drums] Hold the line. Hold your breath. Stand so still you disappear. Tall ones fall once. Small ones learn to fall again, to stand again. I can’t strike out. Can’t go back. Every path is blocked - and I don’t know how to move. [Verse 2 - larger rhythm, more motion] There was rain outside the club. Yellow taxis by the door. You touched my neck and said: “Come, take a break from guarding other people’s war!” I laughed the way exhausted people laugh when something cuts too deep. So... I took two steps. [Pre-Chorus - breathless, rising] Then the air turned cold, like a stab of frozen glass. I felt a shadow cross behind me from a place I thought I'd passed. Kept my guard up... You moved on. (The chance was gone.) [Chorus 2 - larger, more desperate] Hold the line. Hold your breath. Stand so still you disappear. Tall ones fall once. Small ones learn to fall again, to fail again. Clock keeps ticking. Can’t go back. Every path ruled out - and I don’t know how to move. [Bridge - music strips down, heartbeat percussion] I watched the careful people work. Watched the loud ones take the praise. Watched the ones who reached the far side come back acting in new ways. Then suddenly - [whispered] “silence”. [cut] A hand lifts me from the board - - and back. [Massive eruption - oud and strings collide with distorted electronic percussion] Everything is changing. (Everything!) Everything has changed. (Everything!) (Everything! Changed!) Ah, Ah, Ah, Aaahhh! I’m suddenly taller. Aaahhh, Oooohh! Ah, Ah, Ah, Aahhh, Oooohh! Aaahhh! I am suddenly taller. Distance. (Power!) Speed. (Power! ) Powered by my crown. (Power!) I can cross the whole horizon. (Power!) I can reach where kings have been. (Power!) [Smaller] But all my life meant one direction. Stay! (Stay in line.) Think! (Think straight.) Don’t slip. Now every path is possible - (possible - impossible) [cut] and every path can end me. [Final Chorus - enormous but breaking emotionally] Hold the line. Hold your breath. Stand so still you disappear. Tall ones fall once. Black and white beneath my feet, old rules still within my bones. Too much pressure. Can’t go back. Now the whole board opened wide - and I don’t know how to move. [Outro - nearly silent, lone oud returns] Mother said: “Tall ones fall once.” Now I hear my own voice teaching misheard versions of the same rules. And right there - word for word - a child is learning how to stand still. Checkmate! ------ Tall Ones Fall Once (Sunovision 2026) Copyright © 2026 JAG. This was made for my first big contest and I spent a lot of time on the lyrics, and then even more getting Suno to do them justice. I meant to make the intro catchy from the start, building up and exploding musically. I'd love to hear your honest feedback: what you liked about it and what you didn't like. What were your voting criteria that this song didn't fit? How did you interpret the lyrics? What do you make of the composition, the mix, and the master? My songs are often lyrics-first. There are two surface layers that I wanted to leave ambiguous: the parenthood lineage and the chess promotion story. The overall theme below them is how good intentions and perfection can become obstacles themselves. The title is not a real saying, AFAIK, but it sounds good and could be one. Yet, it's slightly misdirected advice, both in terms of chess strategy and through the story of my life. I was a bit struck when I didn't get into the top 51, but having voted myself, I knew there were lots of good tracks. And in fact, I had completely forgotten how surprised I was when it even made it into the initial 125 selection out of 254 submitted/accepted songs: my computer inconveniently died while I was working in Suno Studio, and I had to submit my latest render via my phone. Trying to use Studio on a phone was not very successful. I was happy with the "piece swap" transition, but the pitched vocals were an experiment at the time to distract from artifacts in the voice. I've come to like them as part of the song, but I can also see how they might have ruined it. Just another reminder of how perfection is hard to achieve. Thank you for any support and votes passed toward this song. Feel free to reach out with feedback for future improved versions of the track and upcoming songs. Post it here on Suno, or find me elsewhere. ------
