[cardboard box drops onto concrete] [packing tape tears] [prison ventilation] [metal slot opens] PROPERTY DISPOSITION. Clothing. Books. Legal papers. Personal effects. You can designate recipients. How much postage do I get? Reasonable amount. Dangerous phrase. [paper star unfolds] This counts as property? If it fits in the box. Everything fits in the box eventually. [deep acoustic kick enters] [cardboard thumps become rhythm] EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX [group, low and dry] EVENTUALLY. EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX A shirt. A letter. A photograph. A name. EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX Till somebody tries to pack a whole life into twelve inches of cardboard. [metal latch] Sunday. One square left before EXECUTION. Monday. Eighteen hundred. That's six o'clock for people who still get dinner after. [heavy bass enters] They hand you forms when the universe gets uncomfortable Boxes for your books boxes for your clothes boxes for who gets what after the state gets you Everybody loves a checkbox. Makes death look organized. [clipboard snap] Who gets the papers? Who gets the shoes? Who gets the little folded star when the hands that folded it don't? [group] PUT IT IN THE BOX. No. [group] PUT IT IN THE BOX. I said no. [group] DOES IT FIT? That's not the same question. [beat mutates] Final meal interview. No restaurant orders. No alcohol. No specialized purchase. Cheeseburger. Fries. Chocolate milkshake. Milkshake may be ice cream and milk blended. I've survived prison coffee. I can handle compromise. Anything else? Orange. Whole orange? Yeah. Reason? Is there a reason column? No. Then don't start one. [orange peel tears] [music drops to bass and hand drum] EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX [group] EVENTUALLY. Burger in a tray. Books in a box. Body on a gurney. Date on a clock. EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX [group] EVENTUALLY. But tell me where you put fifteen years of everybody being wrong. [low organ chord] Tell God to check his spam folder. Tell the governor I got excellent timing. Tell the newspaper "unknown event" sounds nicer than "alien" Tell the lawyer government loves a sentence with no person inside it. [group] NO PERSON INSIDE IT. That's how they write clean. Passive voice. Active needle. [metal tray rolls] They say it'll be orderly. That's comforting. Wasn't meant to be. Good. Neither am I. [clock begins ticking] Five fifty-four. Door opens. Five fifty-five. Somebody running somewhere with paper in their hand. Five fifty-eight. Curtains open. Five fifty-nine. Phone on the wall. Everybody looks at it. [telephone ring] Not the stay. [ring stops] Hate phones now. [group, quiet] YOU'RE NOT ALONE. [straps tighten] Wrist. Ankle. Chest. Everything fits. Right? [breath] Any final request? Open a door somewhere. Doesn't have to be mine. What does that mean? Me neither. [all rhythm stops] That's the request. Not save me. Not prove me right. Open a door somewhere. [group whisper] SOMEWHERE. For somebody. [group] SOMEWHERE. [low strings rise] Hope kills people. That's what they say. Maybe. But so does certainty with a clean signature. So keep your miracle. Keep your speech. Keep your last-minute music swelling. Just open one damn door. [deep drums return] EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX [group] NOT EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX [group] NOT EVERYTHING. Books fit. Clothes fit. Paper stars fit. Final meal fits on a tray. But the hand I was holding when gravity split in two? Tell me what box takes that. [white-noise pressure swell] [glass flexes] Kitchen went dark. Every light outside went with it. Something white grew beyond the window. Not a beam. A shape made out of brightness. Glass bent inward. Then exploded. Two directions at once. Her blood. My blood. Hands slipping. [all instruments distort downward] NOAH— [pressure wave] [complete silence] Hold on. [one sustained bass note] Fifteen years later I'm still holding air. [group] HOLD ON. Metal toilet. Steel sink. Concrete. Seven hand-drawn squares. [group] HOLD ON. Six empty. One says EXECUTION. [group] HOLD ON. You want me to stop saying something impossible happened? Fine. Call it unexplained. That make the needle feel smarter? [clock resumes] Six o'clock. Phone doesn't ring. One extra beat. Nothing. Mr. Vale, you may make a final statement. I didn't kill Mara. [long silence] That's it? That's enough. [group, barely audible] EVERYTHING FITS IN THE BOX. No. [box lid closes] Some things don't fit. Some things come back. [metal slot shuts] And some doors open from the other side. [ventilation continues] [end]
