There was a year the sky turned gray, When people we loved just walked away. Their words were cruel, our stories changed, And nothing we could say could make it right again. For a while I thought the hurt would stay, Like a shadow stretching over every day. But morning came, and so did you, You reached for my hand and we just kept moving through. We couldn't choose who stayed or left, Couldn't make them see the love we'd given But we could choose what came next... So we built a life anyway, While the storms rolled far away. Little hands and laughing eyes Filled the places grief had tried. Every mile and every prayer Proved joy was still waiting there. Love still found another way... And we built a life anyway. There were waffle cones and clubhouse walls, Little voices running down the halls. Peaceful mornings, Oregon calls, Bryce Canyon sunsets reminding us how small The troubles are against a sky that wide, With grandchildren laughing by our side. And somewhere between the noise and fun, I realized our life had already begun again. We don't have to erase the past, Or understand why some things didn't last. We only had to stop looking back... And build a life anyway, While the storms rolled far away. Little hands and laughing eyes Filled the places grief had tried. Every mile and every prayer Proved joy was still waiting there. Love still found another way... And we built a life anyway. We found love and purpose down the road, Temple doors and lighter loads. Miles together, hand in hand, Finding God in places we had never planned. Then north toward Seattle, out to sea, Alaska opening endlessly. And I looked at you and understood— We hadn't merely survived. Our life was good. Maybe healing isn't forgetting. Maybe peace isn't making it right. Maybe letting go is simply Choosing what deserves your life. I can love what was, And mourn what isn't. Leave an open door Without standing in it. I can wish them well And still walk away. There is too much love here To waste another day. So we built a life anyway... Not to prove that we'd be okay. Not because the hurt was gone, But because there was still so much love to carry on. Every child who wanted near, Every grandchild we held dear, Every prayer that brought us through Kept me right here loving you. Look at the life we built anyway— Ordinary days outside our door, Christmas lights and Roses galore And somehow I love you even more. Children gathered, grandkids grown, A thousand memories we call our own. Every mile and every prayer Testifies Heaven is right here. And if the past comes knocking someday, It doesn't get to take today. We can bless it, let it go, And turn toward the peace we know: There is laughter yet to make, There are roads we're meant to take, There are temples, mountains, open seas, And little arms still reaching out for me. The storm was real— But so was grace. And love still found Another way. It's not a life we built in spite of them. It's simply... The life we built ANYWAY. You take my hand. We face the day. And keep building Our beautiful life... Anyway.
