Speed that Defies the Night
[Spoken Intro] "Great. Now I'm listening to voices in my head," She turned to the left and picked up the pace. "Hurry, faster," came the voice in her head The "hunters" had to be right on her heels. She was sure the rest of the group was dead by now. [Verse 1] "Don't worry about them, worry about you. Keep going west, quickly." "What's a 'west'?" The concept was totally alien to her. "That's,...the direction you're going. When the tunnel bends right up ahead, take your first left. That's west. Just like the voice said, the tunnel turned abruptly to the right. There was a junction left, and metallic noises straight ahead. She was in full panic as she dove into the darkness. The "hunters" were right on top of her! [Verse 2] "If you'd been any slower, it would have beat you to the junction. Now, move!" That last thought hurt, like someone had shouted in her ear. She picked up the pace, nevertheless. "Sorry, I got excited." Jesse felt something in her knee crunch under her weight. She let out a yelp and sprawled across the bottom of the tube, then she kept moving, eyes burning with angry tears. [Chorus] Run with a speed that defies the night, Chase the whispers guiding you right. Through the shadows, fear finds no rest, Keep moving with a heart beating its best. [Verse 3] The knee was one of the reasons she was here. They had acted like they actually cared when they had crushed her leg. The entire time she was in the hospital she was treated like someone. Right up until she was well enough to work again. They hadn't even put her someplace where she could heal. They put her in a brace and told her to "get to it," and "no one gets a free ride." [Verse 4] she found out that she could get "off" of New Spain. Though she didn't really know what that meant. She just wanted rest, she was so tired. Well, the ride might not be free, but it was going to take her out of this place. "That's the spirit." came the voice, "Keep it moving." [Chorus] Run with a speed that defies the night, Chase the whispers guiding you right. Through the shadows, fear finds no rest, Keep moving with a heart beating its best. [Verse 5] "It's dark in here," Jesse said, "I think I hurt myself." "If you stop, the hunters will hurt you more." "How am I going to be able to tell where I have to turn?" "I'll tell you when. Your next turn will be to the right." Jesse continued in the dark, moving as fast as she dared. She didn't know what was here in this tunnel. "Just you and the hunters down there." "'Down?' And just where does that put you?" "I'm where you're going. Your destination. I'm,...the light at the end of the tunnel. Jesse could almost hear the voice chuckle. [Verse 6] "Cute," she snickered back. "Stop now." Jesse came to a halt, gasping for air. She reached out her hand, touched the wall, just inches from her nose. "Cut that one a little close, didn't you?" She asked the nameless voice. "Quiet. Try not to breathe too loud. The hunter is passing the tube you're about to enter." Jesse held her breath, for a moment that felt like eternity. She started feeling dizzy before the voice came back. "Okey, now, go to the right and turn to the left when I tell you." [Chorus] Run with a speed that defies the night, Chase the whispers guiding you right. Through the shadows, fear finds no rest, Keep moving with a heart beating its best. [Verse 7] "Here we go again." Her arms and legs felt a little wobbly at first, but after a moment they positively ached. "Left." She skidded to a stop, putting more weight on her bad knee than she wanted to. She started off again in the new direction. West, the voice had called it. [Verse 8] "Faster!" "I'm trying!" She could hear the hunters closing the gap. They were speeding up, she was nowhere near the end of the tunnel. "Faster. Put your back into it. Get your head down and put some effort into it. Don't stop no matter what you hear behind you." putting her head down seemed to speed her up, but it wasn't enough, "I'm not going to make it!" [Outro] She didn't feel the end of the tunnel. She rammed head‑first into the access plate covering the hole. The panel was no match for her momentum. She didn't feel herself fall to the planet's surface, inches below, She didn't see the hunter bound past her. It wheeled around, just in time to get crushed under the shuttle's landing gear.
