The Cross Still Carries Me

I came in from the midnight, boots full of dust A heart like a revolver, too broken to trust I wore my sins like a coat in the rain Kept riding in circles through sorrow and shame Then a voice through the darkness called out my name Not with a hammer, not with a flame He found me lost where the wild winds blow And raised this dead man from the undertow I had no gold, no clean record to bring Just a soul worn thin and a rusted-out wing But mercy rode in on a blood-red tide And Jesus met me on the losing side The cross still carries me when I can’t stand Grace keeps pulling me from the quick sand Through every valley, every battle, every scar He has never let me wander too far I was a rebel, a runaway, a man on the run But the Shepherd came looking for His wayward son I owe my life, my breath, my victory Jesus, You gave everything for me He’s been my shelter when the thunder rolled My fire in the night when the world turned cold When the road broke down and the sky went black He put strength in my bones and brought me back I’ve seen doors open that no man could move Felt peace in the storm when I had nothing to prove Every little blessing, every narrow escape Was another sign of amazing grace I don’t deserve all the love You’ve shown But You made this hardened heart Your home Where I saw ashes, You planted a tree Where I saw chains, You called me free The cross still carries me when I can’t stand Grace keeps pulling me from the quick sand Through every valley, every battle, every scar He has never let me wander too far I was a rebel, a runaway, a man on the run But the Shepherd came looking for His wayward son I owe my life, my breath, my victory Jesus, You gave everything for me When temptation comes knocking like a wolf at the door I remember the blood that was shed for my soul When the devil starts counting the things I have done I point to the empty grave and the risen Son No chain can hold what Your mercy redeemed No darkness can bury the hope You have breathed I’m still rough around the edges, but I’m finally free ’Cause the hands that were pierced keep holding me So let the old life burn like a condemned saloon Let the angels sing underneath a blood-red moon I’m not saved by my strength, my will, or my name I’m standing alive by the power of grace The cross still carries me when I can’t stand Grace keeps pulling me from the quick sand Through every valley, every battle, every scar You have never let me wander too far I was a rebel, a runaway, a man on the run But the Shepherd came looking for His wayward son I owe my life, my breath, my victory Jesus, You gave everything for me So I’ll praise You in the ashes Praise You in the rain Praise You through the glory Praise You through the pain Till this outlaw heart beats its final beat I’ll lay down my life at the Savior’s feet
