🪙 PENNIES 🪙
A penny… Just a little piece of metal… But some things… Carry more than they weigh. Daddy used to stop me with the broom in my hand, Said, “Child, don’t sweep away what you don’t understand.” “Every little penny has a story it can tell, Every little mark remembers where it fell.” Momma kept a jar by the kitchen window light, Saving little pieces from the hands of passing time. She’d say, “Don’t throw away the things that seem small…” “Some of the smallest things remember us all.” Pennies… Copper in my hand. Keep one in my pocket… Like Grandaddy said. Pennies… Carry yesterday. Little pieces of love… That never fade away. From seventeen ninety-three, when the first ones were made, Through the hands of strangers and the choices they saved. Copper carried dreams through a young nation’s fire, Passed through generations, never losing desire. Then came the war… And copper had to leave. Steel carried the weight of the world’s uncertainty. They changed with the years, they changed with the age, But every little penny still carried a page. Pennies… Copper in my hand. Keep one in my pocket… Like Grandaddy said. Pennies… Carry yesterday. Little pieces of love… That never fade away. One day these hands will be gone… One day this voice will fade… But maybe someone finds this penny On a cold and broken day. Maybe they’ll pick it up… Maybe they’ll understand… A little piece of my story… Was left inside their hand. Pennies… Copper in my hand. Keep one in my pocket… Till the end. Pennies… Carry voices through time. Little pieces of yesterday… Still keeping us alive. I’ll never sweep them away… I’ll never let them go. Every penny I carry… Is a piece of home. One penny… One memory… One more voice… Coming home.
