-- (translation:) The golden grove has ceased its joyful speaking In birch-tree language, merry and so bright, And cranes, their southern refuge sadly seeking, No longer pity anyone in flight. Whom should they pity? Each is but a ranger — Who enters, stays a while, and leaves the door. The hemp-field dreams of every passing stranger, With the wide moon above the blue lake's shore. I stand alone upon the barren clearing, While cranes are carried by the wind’s cold breath, I’m filled with thoughts of youth, now disappearing, Yet naught of what has passed I mourn to death. I do not mourn the years so vainly squandered, Nor mourn my soul, which bloomed like lilac spray. A rowan fire in the garden wandered, But it can warm no soul that comes its way. The rowan clusters shall not burn to cinder, The grass from yellowing shall not expire. As trees drop leaves in silence, soft and tender, So I drop words of sadness and desire. And if the wind of time, in its wild sweeping, Should heap them all into a useless mound… Just say: the golden grove is weary, sleeping, Its birch-tree language has no longer sound.
